THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: South Korea police raid Jeju Air, airport over fatal crash

South Korean police on Thursday raided the offices of Jeju Air and the operator of Muan International Airport as part of the probe into the fatal crash of a Boeing 737-800 plane that killed 179 people.

The flight was carrying 181 people from Thailand to South Korea on Sunday when it issued a mayday call and belly-landed before slamming into a barrier, killing everyone aboard except two flight attendants pulled from the burning wreckage.

Authorities carried out search and seizure operations at the Muan airport where flight 2216 crashed, a regional aviation office in the southwestern city, and Jeju Air's office in the capital Seoul.

South Korean and US investigators, including from Boeing, have been combing the crash site since the disaster to establish a cause, with both black boxes found and decoding work ongoing.

"In relation to the plane accident... a search and seizure operation is being conducted from 9 am (0000 GMT) on January 2 at three locations," police said in a statement sent to AFP.

"The police plan to swiftly and rigorously determine the cause and responsibility for this accident in accordance with the law and principles."

Police told AFP the search warrant was issued, and Yonhap reported it was approved on charges of professional negligence resulting in death, citing officials.

South Korea has also announced it will inspect all Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by its carriers, focusing on the landing gear, which appears to have malfunctioned during the Sunday crash.

South Korea's acting president, Choi Sang-mok, said Thursday that "immediate action" must be taken if that probe uncovered any issues with the aircraft model.

Authorities have previously said 101 aircraft of the same model were in operation by six different airlines.

"As there's great public concern about the same aircraft model involved in the accident, the transport ministry and relevant agencies must conduct a thorough inspection of operation maintenance, education, and training," Choi said Thursday.

"If any issues are found during the inspection, please take immediate corrective action," he added.

The accident is the worst-ever aviation disaster on South Korean soil.

South Korean authorities have completed the initial extraction of data for the cockpit voice recorder, but the flight data recorder was damaged and was to be sent to the United States for analysis, officials said Wednesday.

Officials initially pointed to a bird strike as a possible cause of the disaster, and have since said the probe was also examining a concrete barrier at the end of the runway.

Dramatic video showed the plane colliding with it before bursting into flames.

The land ministry said in a statement that the country's airports were also being inspected "to evaluate the installation locations" around their runways.

As the investigation continued, families travelled to the crash site for the first time to pay their respects on Wednesday and some returned the following day with cardboard boxes to collect their loved ones's belongings.

On Thursday at the airport, a monk led prayers close to the crash site, while inside the airport, the stairs were covered in colourful post-it notes left by mourners.

"Honey, I miss you way too much," one of them said.

"Even if you faced lonely and painful moments in death, may you now soar like a butterfly," another read.

Relatives also left flowers and food near the site including tteokguk —- rice cake soup traditionally enjoyed in South Korea on New Year's Day —- as they said their goodbyes, many in tears.

Local media reported on a handwritten note, seemingly written by the pilot's brother, that was placed alongside gimbap -- a popular Korean dish -- and a drink cup near the crash site.

"I feel heartbroken when I think about the struggles you faced alone (in your last moments)," it read.

"You were truly amazing and did so well, so I hope you can now find happiness in a warm place. Thank you, and I'm sorry."

On Wednesday -- a public holiday in the South -- hundreds of people queued up to pay their respects at an airport memorial altar set up to honour the victims.

So many people came to the memorial that the queue stretched for hundreds of metres and the local cell phone network was overloaded, local media reported.

Other altars for the victims have been set up nationwide.

My FH5 Log: Z NISMO vs The Clunker Quad

You may recall back in my impression of the Nissan Fairlady Z NISMO (RZ34) in Forza Horizon 5, having proven that it's the ultimate Z-car ever made, the Z NISMO told me that it wants to battle against the quartet of clunkers. Well, here we go.

Here we are on the streets of Guanajuato where the hero car of the Horizon Holidays Mix-up update, the Nissan Fairlady Z NISMO RZ34, is facing these junk cars.

Yes, it's a quartet of junk cars from the said update, with the BMW M5 CS being the big boss and the Flying Spur being its head honcho. The two clunker wagons are their subordinates, if you catch my drift.

One 420PS Z NISMO versus the 2280HP Quartet of Junk Cars. Will our JDM hero defeat the knights of the scrap-o-calypse? Let's roll the tape!

And here are the results...

M5 CS - 54.037s

Flying Spur Mk3 - 59.426s

CTS-V Wagon - 1m01.411s

E55 Wagon - 1m01.879s

Z NISMO RZ34 - 53.770s

The Nissan Fairlady Z NISMO RZ34 took on four clunker cars in a race on the streets of Guanajuato. The Z NISMO is a light and agile sports car with NISMO's motorsports expertise. It was a close race, but the Z NISMO won. I'm glad that Guanajuato's Bola Ocho favors the Z NISMO's dynamics.

With the Z NISMO defeating the quartet of junk cars, the quartet warned of something powerful heading its way.

The Horizon Holidays Mix-up mess is done but for the Z NISMO, the real final battle begins because of the only prize car we'll be getting in the Series 42 update. Will our Z NISMO take on...The Slayer?

To be continued...

Alfa Romeo Junior (966) v Abarth 600e

Alfa Romeo is no longer involved in motorsports. Cars like the Giulia and Stelvio are being phased out after a long run. The Tonale is new to the market, and the reborn 33 Stradale is already sold out. Alfa Romeo has gone dark, but it has emerged with another compact crossover: the Alfa Romeo Junior.

Starting at 29,900 Euros plus additional costs, the Alfa Romeo Junior crossover is the replacement for the Giulietta hatchback, which sounds cruel because with Alfa Romeo no longer making hatchbacks, this Fiat 600-based crossover took over the slot and positioned below the Tonale.

Despite being a crossover, the Junior, as the name implies, is sized like a hatchback, making it breathable on city streets and open roads. Design-wise, the Junior's front view looks like it came from the pages of Toyota and Ferrari design catalogs, while the grille is surprisingly a throwback to Alfa Romeo's past, embellished by the Alfa Romeo Legend Shield. Although made in Poland, it still boasts Alfa Romeo's Italian dolce vita.

Inside, the Junior's driver-focused interior features a fully digital 10.25-inch TFT screen, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity and ChatGPT, Sabelt sport seats, and so on. On the topic of space, the Junior carries 415 to 1280 liters of boot space.

Of course, since electrification is inevitable in the new normal, the Alfa Romeo Junior is offered with the choice of a 1.2 VGT mild-hybrid with 136ps of power while mated to an eDCT6 gearbox, the 156PS Junior Elettrica with 54kWh battery and 592km of driving range, and the cream of the crop; the Junior Elettrica Veloce. The Veloce has 280PS of power and 345Nm of torque through the front wheels, sprinting from 0-100kph in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 200kph. Driving range is around 315km.

To make sure that the Junior behaves like an Alfa Romeo should, it features the most direct steering in the segment while the Veloce's sport-tuned suspension drops the height by 25mm, not to mention sport-tuned anti-roll bars, 380mm front disc brakes, four-piston monoblock calipers, Torsen differential, 20-inch tires, and Alfa D.N.A. system. For a crossover with an electrified drivetrain, the Junior feels out of character for a compact crossover. It may be mild but it's also tangy.

In the topic of safety, the Junior is packed with numerous driver assistance features such as level 2 autonomous driving, 360-degree parking sensors, a 180-degree rear camera, and others.

The Junior may be a cruel thesis in Alfa Romeo's right but despite its crossover credentials, it feels not so bad to drive, although the Veloce is the top shot of the range. In fact, because of the Veloce's electric performance, it didn't take long before another Stellantis relative took advantage of it.

2025 Abarth 600e

This is the anti-thesis doing the work of Abarth's thesis. It's the first-ever five-door Abarth EV crossover that prefers to be obvious rather than subtle. This is the Abarth 600e and this crossover is also a cruel thesis just like the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce.

The Abarth 600e is a compact crossover based on the Alfa Romeo Junior. It's priced at less than 45,000 Euros plus additional costs. Abarth took the humble 600e and injected it with steroids to make it behave like the vermin it is.

In its Turismo specification, the 600e delivers 240 PS of power. The limited-edition Scorpionissima matches the performance figures of the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce but offers an additional 6 km of driving range. However, it is smaller and slightly heavier than the Alfa Romeo model.

It is said that Stellantis cooperated with Michelin, Sabelt, JTEKT Torsen, and Alcon in the making of the Abarth 600e, giving it sporty performance and dynamics in a compact crossover setting. Such lab rat experimentation worked wonders and with such performance, it became the Abarth too cool to be missed.

The Alfa Romeo Junior is a bit more refined, while the Abarth 600e is a bit more aggressive. If this is the case, which sporty crossover would you choose?

Opel/Vauxhall Grandland Mk2 v Peugeot 5008 III

The Opel/Vauxhall Grandland and Peugeot 5008 are very different vehicles. But they both have the same electrified heart. That's something you might expect from Stellantis' mad inventions.

First, let's get to know the prices of the twin midsize crossovers. The second-generation Grandland starts at 36,000 Euros or 34,700 Pounds while the third-generation 5008 starts at 38,200 Euros plus additional costs. On paper, they're slotted below the 40-grand mark, which is reasonably priced for these midsize crossovers from the Stellantis fleet.

Despite their similar sizes, the Grandland and the 5008 have distinct appearances. The Grandland features the new Vizor design that first appeared on the second-generation Mokka, while the 5008 is essentially a larger version of the 3008.

The all-new Grandland features a 16-inch HD touchscreen with smartphone connectivity that controls almost the entire vehicle as well as the 10-inch driver information cluster and an optional HUD.

The all-new 5008, meanwhile, is jammed with Peugeot's i-Cockpit setup consisting of dual 10-inch screens on the Allure or the 21-inch Panoramic i-Cockpit with i-Connect Advanced, voice recognition, ChatGPT, and others.

Space-wise, it's the 5008 that is the most spacious of the two because while the Grandland has 550 to 1645 liters of boot space, the 5008 has 758 to 1815 liters. Surprising.

As told earlier, they both have the same electrified heart. They are offered a choice of a 136PS 1.2L Hybrid mated to an e-DSC6, a 1.6L PHEV with 195PS of power while mated to an e-DSC7, and the range-topping electric with a choice of a 73kWh and 82kWh battery packs.

The Grandland Electric has up to 213PS of power with a 0-100kph time of nine seconds and a driving range of 582km while the e-5008 has up to 230PS of power with a 0-100kph of over nine-and-a-half seconds and a driving range of 664km so, on paper, it's another win for the 5008.

Both the Grandland and the 5008 are now running on Stellantis' STLA Medium platform and as a result, they're both driving better than their predecessors, although they're still front-wheel-drive only so the only paths they're good at are just roads. Not off-roads. Contrasting, isn't it?

The all-new Grandland comes standard with a variety of safety features, including automatic cruise control with stop-and-go function, advanced traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed adjustment, and post-collision braking. For an additional fee, you can add the Intelli-Drive 2.0 system. The all-new 5008 comes standard with Drive Assist Plus 2.0 and Peugeot VisioPark 360.

The Opel/Vauxhall Grandland and Peugeot 5008 are very different vehicles. But they both have the same electrified heart. That's something you might expect but in the end, out of the two, it's the all-new 5008 that takes the share.

Dodge Charger (Gen 8)

First previewed by the Dodge Charger SRT Concept in 2022, the all-new eighth-generation Dodge Charger breaks ground with throwback looks and performance unheard for the Charger.

2024 Dodge Charger

2024 Dodge Charger

With a starting price of under sixty grand plus additional costs, the all-new eighth-generation Dodge Charger is no doubt the most controversial Charger ever made because of the powertrain that contrasts its muscle car looks.

The eighth-generation Dodge Charger is a two-door coupe that replaces the Challenger, which has been the gold standard for Dodge for a long time. The four-door sedan will be released in 2025.

Observing the design, the eighth-generation Charger mimics the looks of the second-generation model, which was made famous by The Dukes of Hazzard and The Fast and The Furious, and it's the first to don Dodge's new Fratzonic logo. Up front, it sports a patent-pending R-wing aero pass-through, which helps minimize drag and maximize performance at top speeds. On the back, it sports a patent-pending Fratzonic chambered exhaust.

2024 Dodge Charger interior

The all-new Charger has a minimalist interior that's driver-focused. It comes with optional Attitude Adjustment Lighting, performance-inspired front seats, a Digital Cluster Display, and a 12.3-inch Center Display with Uconnect 5. You can show off your driving skills by recording your track day or even recording your driving experience and sharing it with the world.

To give a dirty finger to the face of the Ford Mustang, the all-new Charger comes standard with all-wheel-drive, meaning this muscle car is capable of going through tarmac, gravel, and snow, boldly going where no muscle car has gone before.

At launch, the all-new Charger is offered for the first time with an electric drivetrain ranging from the 496HP R/T model to the 670HP Scat Pack. With the Powershot active, the Scat Pack blows from 0-60mph in 3.3 seconds and a 1/4 mile in 11.5 seconds. With such a strong punch, the handling is the antithesis of the muscle car thanks to its mechanical limited-slip differential, multi-link front suspension, integral link rear suspension, and dual-valve adaptive damping system.

Come 2025, the Dodge Charger will get a gas-powered option. It will feature Stellantis' new 3.0-liter Hurricane straight-six turbo engine. The SIXPACK H.O. variant will have up to 550 horsepower, which is more than the EcoBoost-powered Ford Mustang.

Although a slow start because it's no longer the Dodge Charger the world knows, the eighth-generation Dodge Charger is the biggest upset in its class even though it no longer has a V8 engine due to Stellantis' scorched earth policy. With its first-ever electric variant, a Supra-beating petrol variant, 4WD as standard, and lots of toys to play with, this has the potential to star in the final Fast and Furious movie. Do you think Vin Diesel will approve the all-new Charger?
