THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: South Korea seeks to kickstart talks to resolve historical feuds with Japan

South Korea hopes a high-level visit to Tokyo next week will kickstart talks aimed at a breakthrough in historical disputes despite concerns the death of former Japanese premier Shinzo Abe could disrupt efforts to mend ties, Seoul officials said.

Relations between the two North Asian U.S. allies have been strained over disputes dating to Japan’s 1910-1945 occupation of Korea. Washington has been pressing Tokyo and Seoul to mend fences in the face of the North Korean nuclear threat and the rising influence of China.

Officials in the administration of new South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who took office in May vowing to improve ties with Japan, told Reuters they feel emboldened by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s recent election victory which could give him more scope to advance his policy agenda for another three years.

Foreign Minister Park Jin will visit Tokyo as early as next week, a trip which a senior official handling Japan policy said is aimed at “turning on the tap” for serious negotiations on issues relating to forced labor, which stalled under Yoon’s predecessor.

Park will visit Tokyo on July 18, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported on Thursday. South Korea did not immediately confirm the report.

Another official said Yoon would send a high-level delegation led by the prime minister when Japan holds a public memorial service for Abe, who was shot and killed last week while on the campaign trail.

Yoon would also likely use his Aug. 15 Liberation Day speech marking Korea’s independence from Japan as a chance to send a reconciliatory message to Tokyo, the official added.

“What we’re trying to do is to open the door for real talks,” the senior official said.

The assassination of Abe, who was a defining leader in Japanese politics and a divisive figure in Korea, has raised new doubts about the outlook for relations with South Korea, where bitter wartime memories run deep.

Some analysts say Korea might be put on the back burner while Kishida presses to achieve Abe’s unrealized dreams, including constitutional reform aimed at allowing Japanese troops to fight overseas.

But some Korean officials see Japan as more willing to talk now, with pressure by U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration also playing a potential role.

“We see great potential in stronger trilateral relationships,” Derek Chollet, Counsellor of the U.S. State Department, told Reuters this week.

Cooperation ‘inevitable’
Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said on Friday that cooperation with Seoul and Washington is “inevitable” for responding to North Korea’s threat and other regional issues.

“Although relations between Japan and South Korea are in a very severe state … we don’t think it can be left as it is,” he told a news conference, adding Tokyo would work together to resolve history issues and restore ties.

Yoon and Kishida met Biden on the sidelines of the recent NATO summit for their first trilateral talks, and Chollet said Washington stands ready to facilitate strong ties between its two allies.

At home, the Yoon government is gathering opinions from victims of forced labor, lawyers and experts via a newly launched public-private panel, which held its second hearing on Thursday.

At stake are South Korean court orders for a seizure of assets of Japanese companies accused of not compensating some of their colonial-era labourers. Tokyo has warned of serious repercussions if the orders are enforced.

The first official said the Yoon administration was seeking a “realistic, feasible proposal” that can win consent from both victims and the Japanese government.

A third official was more cautious, saying the compensation issue should be resolved alongside trade and other rows, which could make a compromise more difficult.

Yuko Nakano, a fellow at the U.S.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, said any compromise would require patience and commitment from both Yoon and Kishida.

“High-level visits and meetings often attract attention, but equally important is to continue building on efforts that are happening below the surface,” she said.

Aikatsu Planet! (movie)

Aired in TV Tokyo from January to late June 2021, Aikatsu Planet is the fourth installment of Bandai Namco's Aikatsu franchise that breaks apart from the franchise traditions. It features a mix of live-action J-drama (tokusatsu, if you like to refer) and anime sequences and instead of cards, Aikatsu Planet uses the swing system where avatars use swings to tame mysterious creatures known as Dressias, possessing wonderful outfits to use on-stage battles.

The series ended last year but those who are wondering what's next for Hana and the girls wait no more because the movie version of the Aikatsu Planet has arrived in time for the Aikatsu franchise's 10th anniversary, giving fans a much-needed closure.

Aikatsu Planet! (movie)
Aikatsu Planet! (movie)

The Aikatsu Planet girls are back and this time they're on the big screen as the movie version of the said show picks up moments after the series finale. In this movie, Mao Otoha (played by Kahya Date) and the gang are staging an Aikatsu Planet festival on the school campus; meaning there will be more fun and games for the girls as they're getting through all sorts of misfits in the name of all things Aikatsu.

Although appreciated for the return of the STARRY PLANET girls and the classic Aikatsu moment returned in this movie, this movie didn't deliver what the fans wanted; summer uniforms, snowballs, kimonos, and a beach. What a bummer for Aikatsu fans because like the show itself, Aikatsu Planet did break the franchise norms and it's a shame fans didn't get to see what's like when our favorite Aikatsu Planet girls got soaked for summer or whatever the Aikatsu franchise showed in its glorious pasts.

Despite the movie didn't deliver what the fans want for the girls, this movie truly is a fitting start for the Aikatsu franchise's 10th anniversary, even the new songs featured in this movie are proof that it's still Aikatsu. Mind you, there's even a special Aikatsu 10th-anniversary short movie before this and we get to see the original Aikatsu anime characters returned for more.

This movie is a fitting start to the Aikatsu franchise's 10th anniversary and despite lacking the fanservice, their big-screen antics have shown that this is the true ending to the Aikatsu Planet saga...although it hurts saying it this is the peak of the saga has reached. Well done, STARRY PLANET girls.

Now that the Aikatsu Planet movie finally hits theaters, what to expect next in the Aikatsu franchise now that we no longer see them on the telly? Only time will tell...

Toyota Crown Crossover (SH35)

For over seven decades, the Toyota Crown has been a symbol of Japanese pride and each generation is its heritage and culture. With the arrival of the 16th generation Crown, the pride of Toyota has been reborn for the Reiwa era, and for the first time, it will be offered as a global model starting with the controversial Crossover model.

2023 Toyota Crown Crossover

The Crossover model is the first of the new Crown family and it's basically the most controversial Crown ever made because by morphing the Crown brand into a coupe crossover a la BMW X4, fears of witnessing a Crown SUV became a nightmarish reality and because this is the new normal, it's hard to face the music for the time being. Anyway, being the first of the new Crown family, let's get to know more about the Crown Crossover.

2023 Toyota Crown Crossover

The Crown Crossover, priced at 4.35 million Yen plus additional costs, features a coupe-like styling inspired by German hits such as the BMW X4, the Audi Q3 Sportback, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. On the scale between the German trio, I would say the Crown Crossover now behaves like...an Audi Q3 Sportback. More with that later on but continuing on the styling, the exterior boasts a conservative front view that is less radical than the old S220 Crown's massive grille while the side view adopts a coupe-like silhouette and the rear view looks vaguely similar to the Porsche Taycan. Overall, the styling is part conservative, and part questionable at the same time. You can't say why.

Although the exterior styling sparked some confusion among insiders, the interior is heavily inspired by the second-generation Mirai, the only surviving rear-wheel-drive Toyota sedan in the lineup. Although adopting the minimalist stance, the driver's side is packed with noticeable techs such as T-Connect, smartphone connectivity, voice control, heated steering wheel, digital rearview mirror, and others.

On the passenger side, despite its sloping roofline, the Crown Crossover is about as roomy as the previous Crown, meaning you can accommodate up to three clients behind you if you're in the mood for escorting high-profile personalities. Aside from doing contract work for client solutions, it can be used for all sorts of situations be it for family use or for business use, whatever floats your boat. At the back, despite being a coupe crossover, the trunk opens like a typical sedan and it can accommodate up to 450 liters or up to two golf bags. Believe it or not, it can be automatically opened when you lift your foot up. Wise move, Toyota.

2023 Toyota Crown Crossover

In a rather controversial move, the Crown Crossover runs on an FF-derived TNGA-K platform, the same platform used in the current Camry. Despite being only offered in 4WD, the Crown Crossover's driving feel can be somewhat akin to the Audi Q3 Sportback because this platform made it less enjoyable to drive than the S220 Crown but feels like driving on a Sunday afternoon courtesy of its front MacPherson struts and rear multilink suspension. Cozy indeed.

The Crown Crossover is offered only in hybrid with two hybrid configurations to choose from such as the 2.5L A25A-FXS Dynamic Force petrol engine mated to two electric motors, a NiMH battery, and an e-CVT gearbox that promises 22.4km/L on the WLTC Mode scale, and a first for a Toyota hybrid, a 349PS 2.4L T24A-FTS Dual Boost Hybrid system mated to a 6-speed AT and the E-Four Advanced system that brings 80% of its power to the rear wheels, making it almost enjoyable to drive everywhere. The fuel economy is around 15.7km/L on the WLTC Mode scale.

In its 2.5L version, the Crown Crossover can be configured in three driving modes; ECO, NORMAL, and SPORT. In the turbocharged 2.4L version, three additional modes are added including a CUSTOM mode where drivers can personalize their driving experience.

With safety the driving force of the new normal, the Crown Crossover features the most advanced safety features such as the new Toyota Safety Sense which consists of up to 12 ADAS features, and the revolutionary Toyota Teammate advanced drive with Radar Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist, giving this crossover the ability to do semi-autonomous driving while cruising through the Shutokou like a commoner.

The Crown Crossover is by no means one of the most controversial vehicles to come out from Japan, probably because of its coupe SUV approach and the use of the FF-derived platform from a Toyota Camry, giving purists the finger as expected. Despite its controversial approach, the Crown Crossover is the start of the Reiwa-era Crown family because pretty soon, it will be expanded with a sports version, a sedan version, and an estate version. Because this will be the first Crown to be offered to the global market, it's about time the Crown name goes global. Welcome to the Crown connection.

How to dress as the Aikatsu Planet idols

Aired in TV Tokyo from January to late June 2021, Aikatsu Planet is the fourth installment of Bandai Namco's Aikatsu franchise that breaks apart from the franchise traditions. It features a mix of live-action J-drama (tokusatsu, if you like to refer) and anime sequences and instead of cards, Aikatsu Planet uses the swing system where avatars use swings to tame mysterious creatures known as Dressias, possessing wonderful outfits to use on-stage battles.

In honor of the movie version of Aikatsu Planet, it's time now for another "How to Dress as" segment where it's time to learn how to become your favorite Aikatsu Planet girls!

As Hana - Mao Otoha, known by her avatar name Hana, is the main character of the show. Her goal in life is to become Aikatsu Planet's best idol. To become Hana, you'll need long blonde hair to work on and then decorate it with pink extensions. With her twin tails sorted, you are now Hana and you're free to decide which outfit suits you best. Her signature costume may be recommended but there are other outfits she wore in the series for you to try.

As Ruli - Ruli Tamaki or Ruli is the spokesperson of the Meltyhouse brand. She sees Mao (or Hana) as her rival and a friend at the same time. A semi-long lavender color should be the starting point for your first step to being Ruli. With the said hair color at your disposal, decorate it with some yellow extensions and then give it a twin-tailed look. With the hairstyle sorted, you are now Ruli and you're free to decide which outfit you want to wear, be it her signature outfit or her super-cool onstage costumes.

As Q-Pit - Ayumi Tsukishiro or Q-Pit is Hana's first foe she faced at the beginning of the series. Known for her elegance and her piano skills, Q-Pit is a classy idol that should not be underestimated. To become Q-Pit, you'll need a super-long light green hairdo to work with, decorate it with some baby blue-colored extensions, and give it a twin-tailed look to match Q-Pit's. It's hard work from the start but when you sort it out, you're free to decide which outfit you'll want to wear; be it her normal Aikatsu Planet outfit or her onstage costumes.

As Beat - Kyoko Umekoji or Beat is known for her contrast between her formal manners in the real world and her punkish looks in Aikatsu Planet. Being Beat is a tricky one because her hairstyle is a split between the colors black on her right and magenta on her left. If possible, get magenta-colored long hair to start with and then spraypaint half of it with black. With the tricky part sorted, you're now Beat and you're free to wear whatever costumes she wore in the series.

As Shiori - Shiori Motoya or Shiori is one of Mao's closest friends. She came to Aikatsu Planet as a visitor to witness Hana's progress until Shiori decided to become an idol and join the fun. To become Shiori, you'll need long sky blue hair to work with, decorate it with some pink extensions and then give it a bun-ish look to recreate Shiori's hairstyle. Sounds tricky but with that sorted, feel free to decide which outfit suits your style.

As Ann - Ann Kurimu or Ann is a third-year middle-schooler with a devotion to all things sweet. To become Ann, you'll need long pink hair to start with and then decorate it with some sky blue extensions and then give it some pigtails to match Ann's. With Ann's hairstyle done, you're good to choose whatever outfits Ann wore in the series.

As Rose - Meisa Hinata or Rose deserves no introduction. She's the Aikatsu Planet's professional idol who has the highest rank in the Aikatsu Ranking until Hana defeated her to become the Aikatsu Ranking champion in the end. To become Rose, it's best to prepare a super long reddish hair to work with, give it a ponytail look in a big way, and then decorate it with some light green extensions. Feels difficult to work with from start to finish but with her complex hairstyle sorted, you're now Rose and you're free to choose whatever outfits she wore from the series; be it her default costume or her onstage outfits.

As Sala - Sala Itoi or Sala served as Starlet Promotions' dress designer. Although her designs are top-notch, her Aikatsu Planet debut as an idol gives her the chance to broaden her horizons. A simple long orange hair should do the trick, then decorate it with some purple extensions and give it some curly bits at the lower end. With the hairstyle set, you're now Sala from Aikatsu Planet and you're good to pick whatever outfits she wore from the series.

...and there you have it. How to be one of your favorite Aikatsu Planet idols. Life as an Aikatsu Planet idol can be down-to-earth fun and exciting but can be somewhat challenging from the start. Hey, that's life inside Aikatsu Planet, you know. Life outside Aikatsu Planet, well, that's life.

Anyway, enjoy cosplaying as your favorite Aikatsu Planet idols any time you can and see what's like to be in the idol system.

Have fun!
