WALWAL

The term "walwal" is just a synonym for the popular phrase "YOLO", meaning You Only Live Once and in this month's offering from Star Cinema, a four young men are trying to live their lives to the fullest as they've reached the critical stage of their adulthood.

WALWAL

Starring Elmo Magalona, Jerome Ponce, Kiko Estrada, Donny Pangilingan, Kisses Delavin, Devon Seron, Jane De Leon, and Sofia Senoron, WALWAL is about four young men who've known each other since high school and now college sophomores as they tag themselves to face the biggest changes of their lives, no matter how good, bad, and rough things are going to be.

This latest offering reminded us of all the youth films from the past such as TRIP, JOLOGS, GIMIK The Reunion, The Reunion, and many others because while this is basically a youth-focused film that brings WALWAL to a whole new meaning, there's so much to get accommodated with this film. With a blend of laughter, sadness, and anger in store for them, this film really is a mixed bag of emotions that won't go unnoticed and such emotions really portray the millennials of today because this is how you, I, and the rest do most of the time.

While this film can be utterly described as above average, WALWAL is the ideal barkada film that you can spend your weekends with your pals and discover what real friendship is all about.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Mattis vows ‘strong defensive stance’ on North Korea

The United States and its regional allies will maintain a “strong collaborative defensive stance” on North Korea, despite ongoing negotiations to bring peace to the peninsula, Defense Secretary James Mattis said Friday.

Mattis stressed that Washington’s alliance with Japan was a “cornerstone” of regional stability, as he wrapped up a four-day Asian visit in Tokyo following talks with his counterpart Itsunori Onodera aimed at reassuring partners in the region.

Regional allies were caught wrong-footed by a decision from President Donald Trump to suspend joint military exercises between the US and South Korea that had previously been seen as a vital containing measure amid North Korean belligerence.

Mattis said the decision was taken “to create space for our diplomats to negotiate strongly and increase the prospect for a peaceful solution on the peninsula.”

“At the same time, we maintain a strong collaborative defensive stance, to ensure our diplomats continue to negotiate from a position of unquestioned strength,” said Mattis.

Following a historic summit in Singapore between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the US president said he wanted a halt to the drills, describing them as “expensive” and “provocative”. But the allies did not appear to be forewarned.

Onodera said the drills were “important for the stability of the region and this fact will not change in the future.”

Nevertheless, the Japanese minister acknowledged that the decision to suspend the drills was “important in that it supports diplomatic efforts” to denuclearise the Korean peninsula.

Japan is directly in the firing line of a belligerent North Korea, which has previously vowed to sink the island nation into the sea and fired two missiles over it last year, with others splashing into the sea nearby.

There are also concerns in Tokyo and Seoul that Washington could reach a deal with North Korea that would remove the threat of Pyongyang’s long-range missiles that can reach America but leave Japan and South Korea at the mercy of shorter-range weapons.

But Mattis sought to ease such fears.

“We’re in the midst of very unprecedented negotiations right now with North Korea but in this dynamic time, the longstanding alliance between Japan and the US stands firm,” insisted the US defense chief.

“There is absolute reassurance between the two of us that we stand firm,” pledged Mattis.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Pentagon chief seeks to reassure South Korea, Japan on North

US Defense Secretary James Mattis travels to Seoul and Tokyo Thursday to reassure Washington’s key East Asian allies after President Donald Trump unilaterally suspended military exercises in South Korea, sparking concern over his commitment to the region.

With the US president lauding North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a “talented guy” as he seeks to persuade Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons, Mattis will head to South Korea Thursday afternoon after a two-day visit to China.

After discussions with top Korean officials, he will fly to Tokyo Thursday night for a day of meetings with Japanese counterparts.

Both countries have security alliances with the US guaranteed by treaty but have been thrown off-balance by Trump’s quick moves on negotiations with Kim.

Most striking of all, at a press conference after the two men’s summit in Singapore earlier this month, Trump announced he would suspend joint military exercises with the South — with Seoul indicating that it was not informed beforehand.

US and South Korean forces have trained together for decades and always characterized the drills as defensive in nature, while Pyongyang condemned them as rehearsals for invasion and often responded with provocations of its own.

Trump lamented the exercises’ cost and adopted the North’s description to call them “provocative”, adding that at some point, “I want to bring our soldiers back home.”

The US has publicly maintained its commitment to protect Japan and South Korea — both of which host tens of thousands of US troops — from Kim’s nuclear-armed military.

“They are increasingly concerned and worried about the reliability of our reassurances,” said James Schoff, a former Pentagon Asia specialist now at the Carnegie Asia programme.

“There is hypersensitivity now to any decision we make.”

But a senior Pentagon official played down the need to reassure the two US allies.

“Reassurance is a part of the visit but not the main thing,” he said.

The main thing is “continuing the conversation on where we see things going.”

In Singapore, Kim signed a document committing the North to “work toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula” — a vague term open to interpretation on both sides.

Pyongyang has made no public commitment to give up its weapons, and satellite pictures have shown improvement works carrying on at its Yongbyon nuclear research facility.

But Trump has said denuclearisation has already begun and the North no longer presents a nuclear threat.
