The Grand Tour S2: Blasts from the Past

Today's episode of Amazon Prime's The Grand Tour celebrates the golden days of motoring with a road trip featuring two restored classics and a modern take of an American racing icon.

The Grand Tour S2E08

Richard Hammond drives a Jaguar XKSS, which was restored by Jaguar themselves, while Jeremy Clarkson drives an Aston Martin DB4 GT, which was restored but modded. They enjoyed their road trip in France until it was interrupted by James May and the brand new Honda Civic Type R and rearranged for a trip to Spain.

Back in the Eboladrome, true to his words, Clarkson lets loose with the new Ford GT. When handed to the unnamed driver, it set a lap time of 1:17.6.

Drummers Stewart Copeland from The Police and Nick Mason from Pink Floyd battle themselves on Celebrity Face Off. In that segment, Mason did it in 1:21.3 while Copeland did it in 1:24.2.

Kia K5 (JF) - 2019 minor change

The current-generation K5 (JF), known in world markets as the Optima, is now undergoing a 2019 minor model change and for this minor change, Kia's midsize saloon takes flight with a revised look and features that will keep the K5 afloat for more.

On the exterior, the latest minor change features a more slanted version of Kia's signature Tiger Nose grille as well as a new front bumper, new rear lamps, and new wheel options ranging from 16 to 18-inch sets, among many others revised for this minor change. On the inside, the steering wheel's new, new quilted leather seats, new LED ambient lighting that changes depending on the driving mode you set foot, KRELL Premium Sound, and some new software on the sat-nav provided by our folks from Kakao.

Annoyingly for this minor change, the more powerful variant has been omitted as well as the others, which means the choice of engines available on this facelift is now down to a 2.0 CVVL, 1.6L T-GDi, 2.0 LPi (for taxi fleets), and a 1.7L diesel engine. A hybrid and a PHEV might come out later on but in the meantime, those looking for some oomph should go for the 1.6L T-GDi while those looking for some more distance should go for the 1.7L diesel with the combined fuel efficiency of around 16.1km/L. Lesser variants are mated with either a 6-speed manual or AT but high-end ones get a 7-speed DCT.

Safety wise, the 2019MY K5 now comes with a surround view monitor and Highway Assist consisting of adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist systems, just to keep the journey home smooth as a grass whistle.

The 2019MY K5 starts at 22,700,000 Korean Won (around 1.1 million PHP).

Jaguar E-Pace

Following the success of Jaguar's first SUV, the F-Pace, the Jaaaaaaaag that puts the sport back to the sports utility vehicle because not only it looks good to look at, it's surprisingly agile and sharp indeed, the British luxury car maker added a new SUV much to the dismay of Jaguar enthusiasts even for a masked mob leader who called himself Jaguar, only this time, it's a little different than the Jaguars we are familiar with.

2018 Jaguar E-Pace
It's called the Jaguar E-Pace and this is the first time they've made a small crossover that can compete against the likes of Mercedes's GLA, Audi's Q2, and BMW's X1 and while the Germans are clawing their way to the top with their record-breaking sales, this newcomer from Jaguar is ready for a riposte against the Germans because it is a Jaaaaaag.

First, let's get to know the styling and while this is like a mashup between the F-Type and the F-Pace, the E-Pace is surprisingly smaller than its F-Pace brother and when you put them side-by-side, the F-Pace is like a lion while the E-Pace is like a cub that is about to be thrown to the cliff by its father lion, or should I say jaguar because it is a Jaguar. Considering it a painful rite of passage...

2018 Jaguar E-Pace interior
The interior is pretty much basic for a Jag. Of course, the sat-nav works like it means it, the climate control works like it should, the instrumental panel, the steering wheel, everything works like it should and because it is basically a five-seater, it would be unwise to use it as a family car because that will ruin the sweet spot of the second-row seat. Oh wait. The E-Pace doesn't need to be used as a family car because...it's a Jaaag. Instead, you can go with your plutocratic ways to make use of the E-Pace's conveniences while on the go such as taking your mates after work, occupy the seats, especially the boot, with everything you've bought at the thrift store, you can do whatever you want in this crossover Jag without somebody yelling at you and it's as easy as hitting a baseball with a giant bat that cavemen used. Although not pretty to look at, it's not half bad to make use of it.

2018 Jaguar E-Pace

Now time for something alarming on the performance side because when I said alarming, it really is because the E-Pace is the first front-wheel drive Jaguar since the lackluster X-Type and this is something you should better be away from it because having learned out lessons from the X-Type saloon in the past, it really doesn't work and it really doesn't perform what a Jaguar should be so instead, how about opting for the one with the all-new Active Driveline AWD system because with such feature, it's like having two cars in one and because of its recalibrated drivetrain thanks to science, it behaves like a rear-wheel drive under normal conditions and then goes multipurpose on any conditions it gets through, be it tarmac, gravel, and snow. It can be as crazy as using a Subaru for your own gymkhana spoof but it behaves pretty much like its big brother, the F-Pace, and this AWD system is a real winner for this Jaaaaaaag.

Apart from the AWD system, the E-Pace features a specifically made chassis courtesy of its Integral Link rear suspension, which is surprisingly compact and driver friendly, along with is lightweight suspension geometry that makes it work like it should.

Under the hood, the E-Pace comes with a choice of a 2.0L diesel and a 2.0L petrol engine with different configurations, mated with either a 6-speed manual or a 9-speed AT. The range-topping HSE's 2.0L petrol engine produces 300PS of power and 400Nm of torque, capable of going 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds and onwards to 151mph, less than what the Germans allowed to do. Ouch.

While taking on a leisurely cruise on the city streets, the E-Pace isn't half bad and because being a Jaaaag, this one is a real head turner. It even comes with a wide array of cutting edge safety tech so you and the car can be fully aware of the surroundings while heading to your ideal point of interest like the mall, the restaurant, or even your favorite thrift store to buy some useless objects for no reason.

Pricing? The E-Pace starts at 28,500 Pounds (2.1 million PHP) plus on road costs so that is somewhat 250 pounds more than the XE saloon and that makes it the ideal bargain luxury crossover of the year. Yes, the pricing is accessible enough for anyone who wants a Jag but keep in mind that while the E-Pace impresses in its AWD drivetrain, a well-balanced choice of engines, interior, and design, the front-wheel drive offering is somewhat disappointing because it might end up on the wrong side of the park like what happened to the X-Type. Nevertheless, Jaguar's on the roll for making cars that can outpace the Germans with the E-Pace and because crossovers are the dominant species in today's motoring, looks like they're going bullish about this new model right now.

Forza Motorsport 7: Legendary rally rivalry

It's rally season so let's celebrate by taking a wheel behind two of the most legendary machines that carved their own path during the heydays of Group B rallying; the Audi quattro and the Lancia 037. I was simply adored by the stories about how these two changed the rallying landscape forever from how Audi forever changed the WRC rules for allowing 4WD cars to enter rallying and how Lancia gunning down the might of the quattro by whatever means necessary to make the rear-wheel drive 037 a force to be reckoned with.

I love the way how Audi pioneered the quattro all-wheel-drive system and how it forever changed the rules not just in motorsports but also in the motoring industry. Ever since Audi demanded the organizers to allow four-wheel drive cars to compete in the World Rally Championship, it became a dominant force to be reckoned with as demonstrated by a double victory in 1982, a driver title win in 1983, and a double title again in 1984. It was clear proof that thanks to the Audi quattro, the all-wheel drive system became a common cause for most car companies, especially those competing at the WRC.

I also love the way how Lancia made a riposte against the Audi quattro with the 037 and how a ragtag rally team spearheaded by a playboy named Cesare Fiorio changed the rally landscape in favor of the 037, despite one of the drivers saying he doesn't want to be a world champion in the first place. Although being run by a power-boating playboy on a short budget and a part-time driver who didn't want to be world champion, they really know how to use their trump cards very well to confuse the organizers, especially the idea when they present 400 cars made for homologation purposes in a rather confusing kind of way. Did you know in the Monte Carlo rally, before the 037 goes rallying, the team bought kilos of salt so they can use it to clear the road as well as demand the French authorities to clear the road? Well, that excuse doesn't stop there because, after the icy stages of the Monte Carlo rally, they swapped tires. In the Corsica rally, meanwhile, they brought on four 037s to race, which is unheard of for WRC regulations. Then, in the San Remo Rally, the folks devised a little distraction while waiting for the dust to be settled and after all that lollygagging, the dust was gone and the 037 raced all the way to grab the manufacturer title win.

That's why this rivalry made it special in the history of the World Rally Championship because while Audi tries to prove that the quattro and its well-established team are the real rule-changer, Lancia tries to prove that their status as the undisputed king of WRCs is still going strong despite its eccentric management. With the rest of the WRC regulations changed thanks to the Audi quattro, the 037 is the ideal sendoff for rear-wheel drive rally cars and its victory against the quattro is the definitive proof that rear-wheel drive rally cars prevail through the very end. While I'm very amused over the legendary tale of quattro vs. 037 in the WRC, let's pit these rally legends around the Top Gear Track to see which one is king. However, it's raining outside, which gives the advantage to the quattro but you never know what sort of tricks the 037 might possess even in such drizzling conditions. Let's roll the tape...

And now, let's check out the time...

Quattro - 1:29.525
037 - 1:30.870

Whoa, that was too close to call for the 037. Seems that the wet weather favored the all-wheel drive Audi quattro but guess what, when it dries out, it might favor the 037, but still, it's been an honor to sample the biggest rivalry in rally history in a rather considerable way.

Looking back at those two rally legends made me realize how great this motorsport was back then and despite the change of times, rest assured that an epic rally rivalry like this would never be forgotten, especially when a team like Lancia's had some trump cards in store to favor the 037. It's rather sad that Lancia is now diminished into making a lone offering only sold in Italy while Audi continues to multiply like germs. It really is heartbreaking but with cars like these, it doesn't really matter which drivetrain you're up to. It's up to the strategy rally teams possess as long as they adhere to the rules they set foot in.

Happy rally season, ladies and gentlemen!
