Fourth generation Audi A8

For many years, the Audi A8 has became the Audi that sets the other Audis apart because while most Audis became more of a average peoples' luxury car, the A8 is special because for generations, it has became the big saloon used by action stars as demonstrated in car chases from The Living Daylights, Transporter, Taken, and Ronin. Now, with the new, fourth-generation A8, is it still the Audi that action stars nicked to get through desperate chases?

First and foremost, let's investigate what's going on with the new Audi A8, starting with the design and by the looks of it, the design was inspired by the prologue concept car, just to make it look like it's ready for filming for another action flick, although it did made a surprise appearance in the Spider-Man Homecoming flick for product placement reasons, but for the average motorist, there's something to worry about the new design and one such hint is the lamps that behave like a set of Christmas lights you saw them hanging at home.

The HD Matrix LED headlights now comes with laser lighting which can really bounce back when it hits things that reflect its lights and then the OLED rear lamps that is as frightening as the rear lamps of the Mustang when lights flash sequentially. To put it all together, the lighting is all Knight Rider-ish but for the average motorist, they should look away in case a car like this passes by and starts flashing its lights, which is now became the lighter equivalent of truck coal rolling behind a Prius.

The new A8 comes with two different bodystyles; a standard size A8 and a longer sized A8L. No matter the variant, the new interior boasts a rather exquisite taste compared to the BMW 7-Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. On the driver's side, you will notice that the dashboard's heavily occupied by touch screens much like the Range Rover Velar and while it looks very nice for a luxury saloon, it can be downright complicating if your hands are either smothered with dirt or still wet even when you cleaned your hands with an industrial-sized hand sanitizer. For someone knowledgeable enough to understand how these works, the new A8's dashboard can deliver the same experience as the Surface Pro and let's hope it won't have that error message like the ones you unexpectedly saw in the shopping malls because that would be a major embarrassment.

On the passenger side, if you go for the A8L, you'll have plenty to reasons to sit in the sweet spot where you can toy around with the rear-seat entertainment system, the air-con, the massager, everything at the touch of the rear seat remote operating unit which has the same size as a smartphone. The end result is someone with an "out on a limo" feeling to be humbled among the envy of his inferior siblings who never agree to his policies.

2018 Audi A8

2018 Audi A8L
At the start, the new A8 is priced at EUR 90,600, with the A8 L starting at EUR 94,100, and it comes with two new 3.0L V6 turbo engines; a diesel and a 340PS petrol engine. There will be more powerful V8 variants to follow as well as the flagship W12 that produces 585PS and comes with a special cylinder deactivation technology to save fuel. All engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and a 48-volt electrical system that works enough for the engines' idle stop and go function.

Drivability, the new A8 features an adaptively damped air suspension as standard and it can be set to either Comfort or Dynamic, depending on driving conditions. It also has an electric actuators that can lift either each of the wheel or the whole car for better body control. Of course, the new A8 does come with the predictive suspension that can adapt through different road conditions but it hasn't finished until next year so we have to wait. In the meantime, we have to make do with the standard suspension setup that works either a proper luxury saloon or a getaway car while suffering dreary understeering. I know that because even though Audi made the new A8 slightly lighter than the previous model thanks to its combined use of aluminum, steel, magnesium and carbon fiber reinforced polymer, the handling feels like it's been slightly improved at all and even with the sport differential, it still feels like it. Even Audi's new four-wheel steering won't budge this big saloon well like how predecessors act like stuntmen in action films.

I know, the new A8 wants to be the next hero car for the next breed of action heroes but there's a major hindrance to its action hero car status because Audi has deployed the most safest features on a car like this. At start, the new A8 can only possess Level 2 Autonomy (Combined Function Automation) and because the A8's trump card in safety, the Traffic Jam Pilot, is a Level 3 Autonomy (Limited Self-Driving Automation), it's not quite ready until next year but I should point out that this clever feature works well in case of nightmarish traffic conditions like you experienced in Metro Manila but there's going to be some paperwork before this Level 3 feature goes on sale to newer A8s. Because the new A8 will host over 40 driver assistance systems, the status of being an action hero car is now gone and it's now...just a plain Audi you don't want to hang out with.

You should know, the new A8 is the first to incorporate a new naming scheme for their trim models, like for example, the 340PS V6 turbo petrol engine-powered A8 will be designated as the 55. while the lesser V6 diesel produces less than three hundred is designated as 50. Sounds confusing but let's not get bogged down with it because with the new A8 hosts a wide array of safety features, it lost its action hero status and it became just an Audi. Perhaps no wonder that in the Spider-Man Homecoming film, a driving instructor teaches Peter Parker how to drive this thing and it does almost nothing at all to show that the A8 is still the car of choice for Hollywood heroes. Sigh, welcome back to being an Audi, you luxo-barge. And to think that while its predecessors are like stuntmen in films like Ronin, Transporter 2 and 3, and Taken, the new A8 goes on a totally different path because of its autonomy but while it has the risk you're willing to take, the A8 still works really rather well in both ways and you will still be appreciated with what Audi done to their flagship saloon.

GT SPORT: Story of the LC

A GT500-spec Lexus LC became the champion of the recently concluded Super GT season and it's not bad for those who are one with the young jumpstarts that edging the likes of the Nissan GT-R and the Honda NSX in the middle of Japan's premiere touring car championship. So what is it then, this Lexus LC?

20171114193703

That is a tricky one because, by the looks of it, it was heavily inspired by the LF-LC Concept Car from several years ago, making it one of the clearest examples of what happens when a concept car goes into production while retaining most of the striking aspects of the concept car it was based upon. And because it was utilized on a brand new platform, the new model delivers a near-perfect weight distribution that handles like it promised. Of course, while it was powered by the same 5.0L V8 engine from the F lineup but mated with the first-ever 10-speed AT, I wonder what is like driving Lexus' new halo car that promises LFA-inspired thrills like no other?

20171114193653 20171114193712

From what I can tell behind the wheel, this V8-powered Sport GT from Japan is very promising at first and as I kept on driving, the LC500 is still as promising as it was setting off for the first time. I think the Lexus folks used the second-generation Toyota Soarer, which is the first Lexus SC in the world market, as the inspiration for the LC's dynamics and because of the new platform, the new double-joint multilink front suspension, and the Lexus Dynamic Handling, the LC behaves like the Soarer from the last century while promising a well-civilized drive not bad for a grand tourer.

20171114193643

In my mind, the Lexus LC is a Japanese take on the Mercedes-AMG GT because while they're not as superior as their powerful predecessors, they still deliver a show of force purists can't get enough of. Well, the LC is an ideal purists' car because with no turbos or hybrids holding it back, the sonorous tone of its 5.0L V8 engine tweaked specifically for this car is music to their ears and for those who drive it, it didn't matter if today's turbocharged sportscars can beat it in a little game of Top Trumps because, for this car, it's all about being an enjoyable grand tourer made for the most discerning of drivers who want to drive a car that can tour around from one place to another. As I drove the Lexus LC on GT SPORT, it's hard to fathom how good is the ride because the more I keep driving with this car, the more I'm starting to enjoy it and I understand that.

20171114193744

The Lexus LC500 may be Japanese made but it behaves like a European sports car and sounds like an American muscle car it's all about the best of both worlds for Lexus's newest grand tourer that doesn't care about its results at the end of the day and for those who had numerous reasons to hate very fast European exotics, supercharged American muscles, or turbocharged sports cars should look further to this because to you, the Lexus LC is the best car and you would have it than any fast car with an extravagant price tag. Hmph. Only because you are a Gran Turismo fan and since the Lexus LC is now a certified Gran Turismo-exclusive, let's see how much you'll love your new favorite by pitting against its new rivals during their Super GT heydays.

20171114193734

I've been joined by Japan's best supercars, the Nissan GT-R and the Honda NSX, to teach the Lexus LC a painful lesson of what's it doing in GT SPORT for no reason at all. Of course, with these two cars being on every block now and then, they will use their experiences to teach this newbie LC a painful lesson and I went to Suzuka Circuit, one of the Super GT venues, to settle this issue once and for all. Of course, even without GT500 specs, these three latest Japanese sportscars are going to have a blast just like what happened during this season.

20171114193756 20171114193805 20171114193815

The GT-R may be the cheapest of the three but it is the most experienced because having been around for ten years, it continues to improve for the better until the inevitable metamorphosis occurred to our dear Godzilla. Of course, it still grips even with the traction control off, but in the pursuit of precision, the GT-R is known to set blistering fast laps just to demonstrate how much the GT-R has grown since its rebirth ten years ago.

Honda's new NSX may be the most expensive Japanese car sold because of the fact it was imported from America but despite being built in the state of Ohio, it's Japanese at heart and while it's basically a hybrid supercar with a turbocharged V6 in the middle, it still retains the spirit of the original NSX in every way. I know that it has SH-AWD but because it behaves like an Audi R8, it can be downright tricky to get it right because of such nature unheard for hybrid cars. It's amazing that Honda managed to move on from the lackluster CR-Z to the new NSX and I'm amazed by the fact they made hybrid cars engaging enough to break the stereotype.

I already told you about what's like to drive the Lexus LC and now that I have my opinion about these three Japanese sportscars, let's find out what happens when I send these three for a quick lap around Suzuka to see which one is best...

After a hot, well-cool one, and a lap around Suzuka, it's time to see which one is the quickest...

GT-R - 2:28.242
NSX - 2:32.550
LC500 - 2:36.308

Huh, looks like the legend is still going strong when it faces the young upstarts like the NSX hybrid sportscar and the LC grand tourer but still, looks like both the GT-R and the NSX are giving what the Lexus LC deserves because of being a GT-exclusive car.

20171114194152

I know, I may have ruined my experience with the Lexus LC at the end because I called the Lexus LC a Gran Turismo exclusive, and car enthusiasts should know better but despite what went horribly wrong here, the LC is still one of the most enjoyable sports cars you can drive on GT SPORT. It may not be as fast as the GT-R or the NSX but for the thrill of it, the LC500 brings the power to the drivers and despite its technology-induced chaos enveloping this grand tourer, it really is a decent halo car that can pass the candle from the likes of the Soarer and the Lexus LFA.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Duterte backs Japan in countering North Korea

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte condemned North Korea's nuclear ambition and backed Japan's moves to counter threats from the rogue state amid heightened tensions.

Duterte had has his fourth bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Manila.

At the meeting, Duterte, who chairs this year’s ASEAN meetings, assured Abe of his support in Tokyo’s campaign against North Korea. “I can assure you that in the matter of the interest of your country and mine, we are supporting you against what North Korea is doing,” Duterte told Abe. “We have said it several times already in the past that it is not to the interest of North Korea to swagger around and threaten the world, of keeping us hostage with the atomic weapons,” he added.

Despite remote possibilities of the Philippines getting hit by a North Korean missile, Duterte told Abe that Manila is with Japan in pressuring the hermit state to stop its nuclear and missile program.

“We condemn his several launching of missiles. It is bad. It puts a strain on everybody, not only in Japan but all over the world. And he should realize that he’d be responsible for ending life in this planet if his mind goes out of control,” Duterte said.

“That is why we are persuading him, maybe pleading him to stop the aggressive posture... The Philippines is about too far but, you know, nobody will save us from a holocaust if it happens,” he added.

At the ASEAN Regional Forum last August, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-Ho said Washington's hostile policy and nuclear threat towards Pyongyang is the root cause of the problem amid concerns from several foreign ministers.

The foreign minister stressed that North Korea's possession of nuclear weapons is a war deterrence to end the threat and to prevent the military invasion of the US.

The statement came days after ASEAN foreign ministers released a joint statement expressing grave concerns over North Korea's testing of ballistic missiles for the past month.
