Suzuki Solio/Mitsubishi Delica D:2 (MA37S/27S)

The Suzuki Solio or Mitsubishi Delica D:2 in case you went to your nearest Mitsubishi dealer, has been regenerated to its newest generation and whether you like it or not, the new model promises to deliver the same convenience delivered from its predecessors. Small on size, big on space, fuel-efficient, it's the compact minivan that fits through Japan's driving conditions in the midst of the new normal.

Starting at 1,515,800 Japanese Yen (or 1,883,200 Yen if you're in a Mitsubishi dealer for a reason), the new model still offers a choice of two different styles such as the normal and the more stylish Bandit/Custom. Whichever style you go for, you are still welcomed by its modest space and fuel efficiency that is worth questioning.

Looking through the exterior design, the normal Solio/Delica D:2 looks more like a first-gen Spacia Custom when you squint your eyes hard while taking a closer look while the Solio Bandit/Delica D:2 Custom looks more like a Peugeot SUV with some Genesis-esque headlamps on it. Either way, they're still as boxy as their predecessors and they're similarly sized as well, although it's now 20mmm wider than the old one. Good.

Because the new models are now wider than the previous model, you can expect some more room on the interior for up to four people to get themselves accommodated. While the new dashboard is a bit above average for the owners, its added width makes it slightly roomier for either single-child families, joyriders, or even deliverymen using it to deliver the goods to customers. This small minivan works with all walks of life, well, almost.

The new Solio/Delica D:2 still runs on Suzuki's Mild Hybrid technology that works in tandem with SUZUKI GREEN TECHNOLOGY. It's the same K12C Dual Jet engine producing 91PS of power and 118Nm of torque, while coupled with an Integrated Starter Generator, Lithium-ion Battery, an updated idling stop system, and CVT like the previous model. Fuel economy? An honest 19.6kmpl based on WLTC mode standards. Don't worry, they're not exaggerating like last time because this was proven in the real world, I believe. Sadly, no full hybrid on the lineup but why bother?

Both the Solio and the Delica D:2 are offered with mild-hybrid tech but if you're itching for the one with the normal K12C engine without the mild hybrid bits, you'd be better of with the Solio. Either way, in terms of dynamics, thanks to whatever the heck they've done, the new models now weigh over a ton so you might expect that the handling's suffered from the added weight but it didn't bother anyway.

Of course, you can still expect front MacPherson struts and an old-fashioned rear torsion beam as usual so expect the handling to be pretty average for a compact minivan like this but because it now runs on Suzuki's HEARTECT platform, the new Solio/Delica D:2 feels more of an improvement compared to the previous model.

The new Solio/Delica D:2 features a new version of SUZUKI SAFETY SUPPORT, which is a suite of safety features such as Lane Departure Warning function, wandering alarm function, high beam assist, sign recognition function, advance car departure notice function, dual sensor brake support, false start suppression, brake support, backward error start suppression, and more. It's the safest Solio/Delica D:2 offered for those who are willing to get back from another tough day at the office.

And there you have it. The new Solio/Delica D:2 is starting to feel like it's been improved despite the lack of a proper hybrid variant. With the added width, honest fuel efficiency, the added safety, and improved dynamics thanks to its HEARTECT platform, this tiny minivan's evolved.

Suzuki's first-ever full-hybrid now on the new Solio

Since last year, Suzuki introduced us with the brand new Solio and if you can recall, the new model comes with Suzuki's first ever Mild Hybrid technology that works in tandem with SUZUKI GREEN TECHNOLOGY.  The K12C Dual Jet engine coupled with an Integrated Starter Generator, Lithium-ion Battery, an updated idling stop system, and CVT results to the fuel economy is now 27.8kmpl based on Japan's JC08 Mode standards. Refreshed? Joining the Mild Hybrid variants are the first ever full-hybrid variants for both the new Solio and the new Solio Bandit.

2017 Suzuki Solio
2017 Suzuki Solio Bandit

Thanks to Suzuki's first-ever hybrid system, the Solio achieves a much higher fuel consumption of 32kmpl based on Japan's JC08 Mode standards and the secret to achieve this kind of fuel consumption lies to its parallel hybrid system which combines a Motor Generator Unit to a 5-speed Auto Gear Shift transmission, which sounds uncanny for a hybrid because that kind of gearbox makes this hybrid behave like a normal petrol car in partial terms of acceleration. Anyway, the Motor Generator UNit is a compact driving motor that instantly boasts a big amount of energy and together, the Hybrid variants of the Solio combine “further improvement of fuel efficiency” to “strong driving performance with acceleration feel”.

The Hybrid variants offer two driving modes; Normal and Eco, and both modes enable EV driving when the vehicle is running at a constant speed in 60kph or slower.

To help differentiate the Hybrid variants to the Mild Hybrid variants, they feature blue metallic-look parts on the front grille, clear blue lens on the taillights, special emblems, metallic blue-colored upper garnish, and a special blue-based design on the meter.

The Hybrid models start at 2,062,800 Yen.

Mitsubishi New Delica D:2 (MB36S)

The latest-generation Suzuki Solio, in normal and Bandit models, are rebadged by Mitsubishi as the all-new Delica D:2, in normal and Custom guise. Let's check out the latest model and we thought Mitsubishi had enough of rebadging Suzuki cars ever since the NMKV.

2016 Mitsubishi Delica D:2
2016 Mitsubishi Delica D:2 Custom

Yes, this is broadly similar to the current Suzuki Solio a few months ago and while the badges are the main difference between the two models, it's now taller than the old model, more roomier, and now, a lot more fuel-efficient.

In partial terms of safety, the new D:2 comes with the available dual camera brake support system which detects incoming pedestrians and vehicles and it can even engage an auto brake in an event of a pre-collision scenario. There are other safety features such as Lane Departure Warning, Stagger Alarm Function, Preceding Vehicle Start Alert, Emergency Stop Signal that warns drivers at the back, ESP, and 4-wheel ABS.

The new D:2 is now a mild-hybrid small minivan fitted with a brand new K12C Dual Jet engine producing 91PS of power and 118Nm of torque while coupled with an Integrated Starter Generator, Lithium-ion Battery, an updated idling stop system, and CVT, which is rather unsurprising for an average driver. With these, the fuel economy is now 27.8kmpl based on Japan's JC08 Mode standards.

The normal Delica D:2 starts at 1,787,400 to 2,187,000 Japanese Yen while the more stylish Delica D:2 Custom starts at 1,963,440 to 2,089,800 Japanese Yen. They're both available to buy at your nearest Mitsubishi dealerships across Japan.

All New Suzuki Solio (MA26/36S)

2016 Suzuki Solio Bandit

2016 Suzuki Solio

Before you ask, yes, this is the all-new Suzuki Solio, and for this latest generation compact MPV made by the same manufacturer that brought you the very fuel-efficient Alto and the unique kei-crossover Hustler, it's now taller than the old model, more roomier, and now, a lot more fuel-efficient with thanks to Suzuki's first ever mild hybrid technology, which is uncanny for the world leader of fuel-efficient vehicles at first.

Like the previous model, the Suzuki Solio is available with two different styles; the normal Solio and the rather stylish Solio Bandit, which is ideal for those who want to wear sunglasses at the nightlife. No matter which Solio you'll choose, the keystone pops as you enter inside, which Suzuki says it's now more taller and more roomier than the previous model. Because it's more taller than the old model, it's perfect to fit four basketball players in it after their fourth quarter. Roominess aside, the new model still has more room for your stuff. There's even a sub trunk at the back of the car where you can store some of your stuff discreetly.

Now, the important bit of the new Solio, which is its performance. Like I said, this new model comes with Suzuki's first ever Mild Hybrid technology that works in tandem with SUZUKI GREEN TECHNOLOGY  Under the hood is Suzuki's brand new K12C Dual Jet engine producing 91PS of power and 118Nm of torque, while coupled with an Integrated Starter Generator, Lithium-ion Battery, an updated idling stop system, and CVT, which is rather unsurprising for an average driver. With these, the fuel economy is now 27.8kmpl based on Japan's JC08 Mode standards.

In the issue of safety, the new Solio comes with the available dual camera brake support system which detects incoming pedestrians and vehicles and it can even engage an auto brake in an event of a pre-collision scenario. There are other safety features such as Lane Departure Warning, Stagger Alarm Function, Preceding Vehicle Start Alert, Emergency Stop Signal that warns drivers at the back, ESP, and 4-wheel ABS.

The brand new Solio starts from 1,454,760 to 2,176,200 Yen while the Bandit starts from 1,825,200 to 2,249,640 Yen.

2014 Suzuki Solio

2014 Suzuki Solio

This is the second Suzuki vehicle to be equipped with the Japanese automaker's DUAL JET ENGINE since the Swift earlier this year. The 2014 Suzuki Solio, aside from its styling updates that makes it more of a facelift, now comes with the 1.2L K12B DUAL JET engine which produces 91PS of power and 118Nm of torque. To recall, the dual injection system on its 1.2L petrol engine works by increasing vaporization, making combustion more efficient. It channels fuel to two intake ports instead of only one per cylinder.

Aside from the DUAL JET ENGINE, it even comes with a regenerative braking mechanism and an idling stop system. Put all these together and you'll have class-leading fuel economy of 25.4kmpl in the Japanese JC08 driving cycle, exempting the car from all taxes.

The 2014 Solio costs from 1,382,850 to 1,903,650 Japanese Yen.

Suzuki Solio Bandit (MA15S)

This is the gauntlet thrower in question, this is the Suzuki Solio Bandit, and think of it as the evil twin of the Suzuki Solio, a car that has been popularized due to KAT-TUN's endorsement. Thanks to that, the Solio is targeted only to KAT-TUN fans and pretty soon if some girl has a lot of KAT-TUN posters in her bedroom, the Suzuki Solio will become her bedroom wall poster, you know what I'm saying? With this version, we believe that KAT-TUN is going to endorse an upcoming ad featuring the new Suzuki Solio Bandit.

2013 Suzuki Solio Bandit

2013 Suzuki Solio Bandit

Bandit, hmmmm? That Bandit name kinda sounds like the Suzuki Bandit bike range but wait, we're not talking because, in this blog, we don't involve bikes. Jeremy Clarkson hates bikes and so do I. We don't like bikes and if you're a bike lover who read my blog, you're pathetic, you're in the wrong blog. Anyway, it still looks like the Solio to me but on the front, it's a bit more...Indian. Imagine if Maruti Suzuki going to make one of these, it could be that car but wait, if you're an Indian who read this post, you're pathetic because Maruti Suzuki will never, and never will, sell the Solio to the Indian drivers until further notice. We're doing this for you because we did this research.

Back to the exterior well from the looks of it, the Bandit has a front mask that looks different from the standard Solio, Piano Black-painted LED headlamps, 15-inch alloy wheels, and a new front bumper that looks like a big guppy mouth that's going to swallow the whole birthday cake. Imagine if your son saw your Bandit in the middle of bedtime, your son might say...um...the Japanese of "Daddy! Daddy! There's a monster outside!!!" and you might say to your son...the Japanese of "No, that is my new Suzuki Solio Bandit, now go to bed". What do you think of that? A 5-seater minivan that will terrify your little kids? Oh yes, and some...

2013 Suzuki Solio Bandit interior

2013 Suzuki Solio Bandit interior

Inside the Solio Bandit comes with a dedicated seat upholstery stripe pattern, black door trim, anti-glare rear view mirror, and rear seats that can slide forward, backward, or recline. In Solio fashion, it can accommodate up to five people. Yep, KAT-TUN can be accommodated on the Solio Bandit's interior for sure. Speaking of which, various seating arrangements can be accommodated through various situations such as cargo space or a place to rest.

The Suzuki Solio Bandit comes with the K12 B (1.2-litre) DOHC 16-valve VVT engine with the power output of a frugal 91PS and the torque of 12.0kg・m. Thanks to the improved CVT, it can go up to 20.6km/L on the JC08 Mode scale but if you go for the new IDLING STOP feature, you now have 21.8km/L of fuel economy on the JC08 Mode scale. It qualifies for Japan's ECO CAR GENZEI system.

Suzuki's Solio Bandit is available in seven colors; Pearl White (Z7T), Bluish Black Pearl (ZJ3), Silky Silver Metallic (Z2S), Classy Red Pearl (ZJR), Mysterious Violet Pearl (ZED), Pearl Metallic Cashmere Blue (ZCW), and Luna Gray Pearl Metallic (ZLY).

My comment:

The Suzuki Solio Bandit may have a name derived from a bike but with a look that is a bit more Indian with a scary-looking front bumper that feels like it's going to eat a 5-year-old boy. Again, if you're an Indian who read this post, you're pathetic because Maruti Suzuki will never, and never will, sell the Solio to Indian drivers until further notice. Understood? If you have complaints, post your comments below and we'll talk. Anyway, the Suzuki Solio Bandit starts at 1,683,150 Japanese Yen so it should be a bit more expensive than the standard Solio but still, it will only attract KAT-TUN fans everywhere because KAT-TUN's going to endorse it. CHECK THE SOLIO!

Suzuki adds IDLING STOP on the Solio. Releases special edition "BLACK & WHITE"

2012 Suzuki Solio BLACK & WHITE

Most people love the all new Suzuki Solio probably because of the commercial starring famous J-POP male group, KAT-TUN. We couldn't confess it but because of such popularity, the new Suzuki Solio won the 2011 Good Design Award. To commemorate its popularity, Suzuki launched the much awaited idling stop variant for the Solio.

The idling stop system equipped on the Solio's K12B engine will provide a maximum fuel economy of 21.2km/L JC08 and 24.5km/L 10-15. So far then, the Solio's ecology is shaping up well.

Also, Suzuki released a special edition Solio "BLACK & WHITE", which is available in two titular colors; Pearl White and Bluish Black Pearl. Special amenities include a smoke-colored grille, black interior, checkered seats, special 15" rims, BLACK & WHITE emblem, and loads of extras. This variant is all about unpredictability.

Mitsubishi Delica D:2

2012 Mitsubishi Delica D:2
When the new Suzuki Solio launched since December 24, 2010 (and already on sale since January 7, 2011), Mitsubishi Motors collaborated with Suzuki for selling their own version of the new Solio. As a result, in February 24, 2011, the Mitsubishi version of the second-generation Solio turned out to be "another Delica", coming to dealerships this March 10.

Calling this "another Delica" that slots next to the Delica D:5, my understanding about the new Delica D:2 is pretty much the same as the new Suzuki Solio. In case that Mitsubishi fans want to know more about the 2012 Mitsubishi Delica D:2, here are five things you should know about this "another Delica" that has the same features found on the new Suzuki Solio;

1) Big Space - The Mitsubishi Delica D:2 is very spacious indeed. Spacious enough to fit up to five people and its legroom is not so shabby either.

2) Sliding Doors - The Mitsubishi Delica D:2 has two sliding doors, making it a fun-to-access experience for this compact minivan made exclusively for Japanese Mitsubishi fans who think that the Delica D:5 is too expensive for them. They can be open either physically or from a touch of a button.

3) Seating arrangements - The Mitsubishi Delica D:2 has a wide array of seating arrangements that fits your every scenarios.

4) Fuel Economy - The Mitsubishi Delica D:2's K12B (1.2-litre 4-cylinder DOHC VVT engine) has a fuel economy of 22.5km/L (10-15 Mode, 20.0km/L in JC08 Mode). It comes with a CVT for optimized fuel efficiency.

5. Eco-car privileges; Most variants of the Mitsubishi Delica D:2 receive a 75% tax break as part of Japan's "Eco-car Genzei" system.

My thoughts about the Delica D:2:

Well, pretty much the same as the new Solio. Which means, there's nothing so special about the Mitsubishi version of the new Suzuki Solio, the Delica D:2. Just leave it to the Japanese Mitsubishi fans...

Just imagine that this is a new Suzuki Solio photoshopped with something Mitsubishi, well, this is no photoshopped Solio, this is the real deal!

ULTIMATE WHEELS

ULTIMATE WHEELS

The title says it all, Ultimate Wheels is the title of the song used on the new Suzuki Solio starring none other than famous J-Pop Boy Group, KAT-TUN! Not only KAT-TUN fans are going to go gaga over KAT-TUN's latest single, this is targeted by car enthusiasts everywhere because this is the Suzuki new Solio's theme song!

The ULTIMATE WHEELS maxi single CD packs not just the ULTIMATE WHEELS song, which is the Suzuki new Solio's theme song, but also includes three songs saved for KAT-TUN fun such as TWO, MAKE-OR-BREAK, and 夜明けまで. If you're not into these three, I suggest the song ULTIMATE WHEELS is the best pick. My recommendation is to play this new KAT-TUN song on the new Suzuki Solio and let KAT-TUN sing your way while driving the new Suzuki Solio all over Japan! This is going to be one heck of a good time road trip with you, KAT-TUN, and the new Suzuki Solio! Enjoy!

Mitsubishi version of the Suzuki Solio to be named Delica D:2?

Check out this leaked leaflet photoshot by a certain Minkara blogger

Leaked leaflet of Mitsubishi Delica D:2

It seems that the name of the Mitsubishi version of the recently launched Suzuki Solio will be Delica D:2?!

DELICA D:2?!

Why D:2?

Here's the truth:

Since its debut in December 24, 2010 and already on sale since January 7, 2011, the Suzuki Solio will be rebadged by Mitsubishi for their new compact minivan. I am not sure why that why Mitsubishi will name this Solio an another Delica...

This another Delica will debut in Spring 2011...

Suzuki New Solio (MA15S)

Just that we thought that Suzuki was going to discontinue the Wagon R-based Solio, well, you're out of luck. The old Solio's disappeared and replaced...by a new Solio!

2012 Suzuki Solio

2012 Suzuki Solio interior

Slated for Japanese sale at January 7, 2011, the new Suzuki Solio is now made into more of a unisex compact minivan. Now that the odd shape from the old Wagon R is gone, the new Suzuki Solio seems to be more aggressive like the Palette SW. This is somewhat a good news because the new Solio is made to be the most stylish compact minivan offered in Japan.

The new Solio's interior was borrowed mostly from the Palette or Wagon R but the similarity is somewhat a superficial result. On the lighter side, the stylish interior is fit enough for five people, and the arrangement is a common feature for various types of situations.

The new Suzuki Solio is armed with the K12B (1.2-litre) DOHC 16-valve VVT engine with the power output of a frugal 91PS and the torque of 12.0kg・m. In terms of fuel efficiency, the new Solio has a fuel economy of 22.5km/L (in Solio G 2WD variant). The Solio X and S variants have a fuel economy of 21.0km/L (2WD). Thanks to the CVT equipped, the new Solio can go further on your first adventure.

MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE SOLIO:
The new Suzuki Solio is now even more stylish and reasonably-priced compact minivan Suzuki ever made. I thought it was a kei car but honestly the Solio is not a kei car because of a 1.2-litre engine. Despite my point, the new Solio is a perfect unisex vehicle designed for drivers of all genders. Guess the Palette SW and the Wagon R Stingray will be upset over the new Solio's front face and the rear view mistaken for the Nissan Elgrand E52. Anyway, this JDM compact minivan is ready to roll this January as a 2012 model.

Reader Note: There is a special Suzuki Solio site starring famous J-Pop group, KAT-TUN! Hope you JDM and J-Pop enthusiasts enjoy with KAT-TUN and the new Suzuki Solio! Check it out at http://www.suzuki.co.jp/solio/solio_kat-tun/index.html
