Suzuki Wagon R Smile (2025MY Minor Change)

The Suzuki Wagon R Smile has been updated for its 2025 model year, and it is time to reintroduce this kei minivan from a different perspective.

Suzuki Wagon R Smile (2025MY Minor Change)
2025 Suzuki Wagon R Smile

Priced at 1,489,400 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the updated Smile is more than just its revised looks.

2025 Suzuki Wagon R Smile interior

Beginning with the exterior design, the Smile now features an updated front face that saw its front grille shortened to half, all in the name of gentleness and cuteness. Also, the plated back door garnish on the HYBRID X model has been revised and the shoulder line has been simplified.

There are no changes to the interior, but it now offers two new color combinations for the instrument panel: "Reflection Gray & Copper Gold" and "Moss Blue & Silver." The front door armrests also match the instrument panels. Additionally, a smartphone-linked memory navigation system is available as a manufacturer's option. This system includes a new drive recorder link, HDMI input, and Suzuki Connect functionality.

The Suzuki Wagon R Smile is built on the HEARTECT platform and features front MacPherson struts with coil springs. For front-wheel-drive (FF) models, there is a choice of a rear torsion beam, while 4WD models come with an Isolated Trailing Link. Additional features include torsion bar stabilizers, rack and pinion steering, and options for disc brakes on FF models and ventilated disc brakes on 4WD models. These dynamics make the Wagon R Smile enjoyable to drive, comparable to pushing a baby stroller with a peacefully sleeping child.

Under the hood, the Smile is equipped with a RO6D 660cc three-cylinder petrol engine, producing 49 PS of power and 58 Nm of torque. When paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), it achieves a fuel economy of 23.9 km/l on the WLTC scale.

For those interested in hybrid variants, they feature the same engine but are enhanced with a 1.9 kW electric motor, a lithium-ion battery, Idling Stop, and Eco-Cool technology, resulting in a fuel economy of 25.1 km/l on the WLTC scale. It's as efficient as today's Spacia, only slightly cheaper.

As always, the Suzuki Wagon R Smile comes equipped with the Suzuki Safety Support suite, which includes various driver aids to ensure safety everywhere.

If you're looking for a fuel-efficient kei minivan but can't afford a Spacia, consider the Smile you're affordable alternative.

Subaru Chiffon Try

Remember the Daihatsu FunCross two years ago? Guess what, Subaru borrowed one for their own version of the said kei car. Called the Chiffon Try, it's for those who want a Daihatsu Tanto FunCross but their nearest dealership is Subaru's. Not bad.

2025 Subaru Chiffon Try
2025 Subaru Chiffon Try

With prices starting at 1,831,500 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the Tanto FunCross is the rugged version of the current-generation Chiffon that features a rugged exterior with a tough front face and black claddings on the side and back. Although rugged, observers still consider it "cute", just like the rest of the Chiffon family.

On the interior, the Try's seats feature a camouflage design and some orange panelings that are in sync with its rugged design. Although they're somewhat show-off, their signature traits are still in this model; the signature pillarless door on the passenger side, space for four people, various seating arrangements, and various compartments to store your stuff, among many others. Word of advice, though, there are USB-C ports involved in this car so you better bring the right plug while on the go.

Like today's Chiffon range, the Chiffon Try runs on the DNGA architecture. Along with the rack-and-pinion steering, front MacPherson Strut suspension, ventilated disc front brakes, and leading trailing rear brakes, not to mention the torsion beams for FF models and 3-link rear suspension for 4WD models, the Try behaves pretty much like a Chiffon despite its rugged looks, as expected. Although made for the great outdoors, it's still a city car that fits well with the Tokyo traffic.

Under the hood, the Try runs on the KF 660cc 3-cylinder DOHC 12V EFI engine. Mated to a D-CVT, the fuel economy is up to 21.9km/L based on WLTC Mode standards.

Like most Chiffon models, the Try features Smart Assist, a suite of active safety features ranging from collision avoidance, detection, driving load reduction, and parking. It even comes with full LED headlamps, VSC, TRC, CTA, emergency stop signal, ABS, TAF body, SRS airbag, and ISOFIX.

So, if you want a Daihatsu Tanto FunCross but your nearest dealership is a Subaru dealership, the Chiffon Try is for you.

This is the first-ever Honda N-BOX Joy, an outdoor-themed variant of the third-generation N-BOX priced at 1,844,700 Yen plus additional costs, which is cheaper than the recent Suzuki Spacia Gear but slightly more costly to own than the Mitsubishi Delica Mini. A fair trade in the market for outdoor-oriented kei minivans.

Although it's basically a third-generation N-BOX by the looks of it, the Joy features black cladding underneath, a front bumper with holes on the center-right followed by six holes above the front bumper, specially-made Full HED headlamps, taillights from the N-BOX Custom, black side mirrors, and to top it all off, the Joy badge. For an additional extra, customers can have a special package with front fog lamps and a front grille that spells Honda on it.

While the interior works just like the other N-BOX variants, the Joy features Brown-and-Black checkered seat fabric that is surprisingly stain-proof, making cleanup a breeze. Fold the rear seats down, and you will have a Furatto Terrace to relax. It even comes with a floor-under box to store your necessities. With a space of 148cm in length, 117cm in width, and 115cm in height, this outdoor-themed N-BOX means business and leisure at a snail's pace.

Like the rest of the lineup, the N-BOX Joy is powered by a 660cc i-VTEC engine that produces 58PS of power output and 65Nm of torque, and when mated with a CVT, fuel efficiency is around 21.3km/L based on WLTC Mode standards. That's more than the Delica Mini, as expected. Of course, you can exercise your options with the available turbocharged engine and four-wheel drive.

As for safety, the N-BOX Joy comes with Honda Sensing, VSA, emergency stop signal, hill start assist function, and a multi-view camera system, among many others.

The Honda N-BOX Joy is the first Honda N-BOX variant designed for outdoor enthusiasts. It's a kei minivan, which means it's small and light, but it has a lot of room inside. It also has a lot of features that make it perfect for camping and other outdoor activities. The market for outdoor-oriented kei minivans is growing thanks to the arrival of the first-ever Honda N-BOX Joy.

Third-generation Suzuki Spacia Gear

The Suzuki Spacia Gear is back, and it's now based on the third-generation Spacia that was released last year. This new model is designed for the outdoors and aims to compete with the Daihatsu Tanto FunCross and Mitsubishi Delica Mini.

2025 Suzuki Spacia Gear
2025 Suzuki Spacia Gear

With prices starting at 1,952,500 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the all-new Spacia Gear chomps down its outdoor-oriented kei minivan rivals in the name of fuel efficiency while donning its new and exciting ways to keep it afloat in the midst of the new normal.

The new Suzuki Spacia Gear looks just like the third-generation Spacia. However, Suzuki revived the headlamps from the previous model and added a Jimny-styled grille. Flashbacks are anything but cute for the all-new Spacia Gear until you take a peek at its interior.

2025 Suzuki Spacia Gear
2025 Suzuki Spacia Gear interior

Just like the entire Spacia range, the renewed interior features a wide array of convenient features such as the multi-use flap, independent rear seat slide, rear seat slide straps, and a personal table for rear passengers, not to mention lots of compartments to place, giving these new models plenty of uses in various situations.

2025 Suzuki Spacia Gear
2025 Suzuki Spacia Gear

The all-new Spacia Gear has Mild Hybrid technology and features an Integrated Starter Generator linked to a lithium battery pack collaborating with its fuel-efficient R06D 660cc engine. Thanks to this fuel-efficient measure as well as Suzuki's HEARTECT platform, the all-new Spacia Gear has 23.9km/L of fuel economy based on WLTC Mode standards. It's the most fuel-efficient outdoor-themed kei minivan ever made and Suzuki is still the king of fuel efficiency.

The Spacia Gear's turbo variant features Power Mode, which makes it more responsive on slopes or when merging onto the highway. It sounds great but the fuel economy is around 21.9kmpl.

For safety, the all-new Spacia Gear comes with the latest version of SUZUKI SAFETY SUPPORT, which is a suite of safety features such as a Lane Departure Warning function, wandering alarm function, high beam assist, sign recognition function provided by its optional Omni-directional monitor camera package, advanced car departure notice function, dual sensor brake support, false start suppression, brake support, backward error start suppression, and more.

The all-new Suzuki Spacia Gear is the most expensive of the outdoor-oriented kei minivans, but it's also the most fuel-efficient. That puts its rivals, the Daihatsu Tanto FunCross and Mitsubishi Delica Mini, back into the toybox. With this one, Suzuki is still the king of fuel efficiency, even in the midst of the new normal. Your quiet weekend drive to Mt. Fuji has turned into a fun and fuel-efficient adventure.

In Spacia tradition, the third-generation model features two different styles to choose from such as the all-familiar normal Spacia and the stylish Spacia Custom that is now highly reminiscent of a Solio Bandit from a long time ago. Whichever Spacia you're on, you'll be greeted with redesigned looks that show not just proof of maturity but also how far the Spacia has gone since the first-generation model came out a decade ago.

The renewed interior features a wide array of convenient features such as the multi-use flap, independent rear seat slide, rear seat slide straps, and a personal table for rear passengers, not to mention lots of compartments to place, giving these new models plenty of uses in various situations.

The third-generation Suzuki Spacia's Mild Hybrid technology features an Integrated Starter Generator linked to a lithium battery pack collaborating with its fuel-efficient R06D 660cc engine. Thanks to this fuel-efficient measure as well as Suzuki's HEARTECT platform, the all-new Spacia has 25.1km/L of fuel economy based on WLTC Mode standards. It's still the most fuel-efficient kei minivan ever made and Suzuki still keeps its laurel intact.

The Spacia Custom's turbo variant features Power Mode, which makes it more responsive on slopes or when merging onto the highway. It sounds great but the fuel economy is around 21.9kmpl.

For safety, the all-new Spacia comes with the latest version of SUZUKI SAFETY SUPPORT, which is a suite of safety features such as Lane Departure Warning function, wandering alarm function, high beam assist, sign recognition function provided by its optional Omni-directional monitor camera package, advanced car departure notice function, dual sensor brake support, false start suppression, brake support, backward error start suppression, and more.

The competition tried messing with the Suzuki Spacia and they failed. The Spacia is still the most fuel-efficient kei minivan ever made and in this third-generation form, the title stands. With its all-new look, convenient interior, and improved efficiency, this is the Suzuki Spacia reloaded for the new normal.

Honda N-BOX (Third Generation)

The first of Honda's N line of kei cars is now on its third generation as the all-new N-BOX promises to fit through the demands of the new normal with its new style, new interior, and new tech while retaining the classic N-BOX brand that made it the best-selling Honda in ages.

2024 Honda N-BOX
2024 Honda N-BOX

The best-selling Honda in Japan, the N-BOX, has reached its third generation and this all-new model marks the new start for the first of Honda's N line of kei cars in this Reiwa era we lived in. Catering to the demands of this era of the new normal, the N-BOX of the Reiwa era puts its emphasis on usability, comfort, and efficiency, in somewhat ascending order just like most kei cars should. Yours for 1,648,900 Japanese Yen plus additional costs.

Like its predecessors, the third-generation N-BOX is offered in two different styles; the normal one and the Custom one. While the normal one looks pretty much the same as the previous model, the Custom one looks like a mini-me StepWGN Spada of today. Either way, the new styling is one of the main feats of the all-new N-BOX.

Apart from the new exterior design, the interior is all-new for this model, as demonstrated by the new dashboard layout packed with a seven-inch TFT unit as the dial display and a nine-inch touchscreen mounted in the middle. As for comfort, it still snugs just like the previous model and can still carry most of today's grocery list as usual.

For those who have a cart or a wheelchair, a Slope variant was offered which comes with a rear super flex slope, electric winch, back door lamp, and a wheelchair fixing belt, among many others. Quite handy, I dare say.

2024 Honda N-BOX

The third-generation N-BOX is powered by a 660cc i-VTEC engine that produces 58PS of power output and 65Nm of torque, and when mated with a CVT, fuel efficiency is around 21.6km/L based on WLTC Mode standards. Of course, you can exercise your options with the available turbocharged engine and four-wheel drive just in case.

With usability one of the main feats of the new model, Honda wasted no time recalibrating its dynamics to give a 4.5m turning radius, making it easy to get in and out of the parking spot. As for safety, the third-generation N-BOX comes with Honda Sensing, VSA, emergency stop signal, hill start assist function, and a multi-view camera system, among many others.

The best-selling Honda vehicle in Japan has leveled up as the all-new N-BOX caters to the demands of the era of the new normal with its usability, comfort, and efficiency. Welcome aboard.

2nd Gen Mitsubishi eK Space (2024 facelift) and Delica Mini

The second-generation Mitsubishi eK Space has received a facelift to keep itself fresh and apart from that, its rugged sibling, the Delica Mini, joins the party, giving customers various ways and means to enjoy the traffic-friendly kei minivans Mitsubishi offered.

For the 2024 model year, the second-generation Mitsubishi eK Space is now updated with a heavily revised front view that is proven to be more stylish than its pre-facelifted model. The first-ever Delica Mini, meanwhile, is the rugged version of the eK Space that serves as the replacement for the now-axed eK X Space. With its rugged styling and the DELICA lettering etched on the front and back, the Delica Mini showcases its outdoorsy vibe fit for a quiet Sunday drive into the woods.

2024 Mitsubishi Delica Mini

The interior looks pretty much the same as the pre-facelift model but it's got a new sat-nav offered as an available extra and that's pretty much about it. For more expensive models, you can expect some noticeable stuff you may find, well, noticeable, such as the back table at the back of the front seats, keyless entry, touch panel aircon, and others, not to mention the waterproof sheet fabric which is ideal when you accidentally spilled something. The Delica Mini inherits most of the interior features from the eK Space so you can expect the same stuff from it.

Either way, they are tall enough to let occupants stretch themselves on the inside and offer generous rear legroom and ample spacing fit for all kinds of stuff to do. Honest work.

2024 Mitsubishi Delica Mini

Both the facelifted eK Space and the Delica Mini are equipped with the same BR06 three-cylinder DOHC 12V ECI engine bolted with a tiny electric motor and a CVT gearbox. Thanks to some slight improvements, the fuel economy is around 20.9kmpl based on WLTC Mode standards. The Delica Mini is offered exclusively with the turbocharged variant of the same engine producing 64PS of power output and 19.2kmpl of fuel economy.

In kei car tradition, both the eK Space and the Delica Mini are no sweat to drive thanks to their compact sizing, less complicated suspension setup, and available 4WD, not to mention a wide range of safety tech from e-Assist to MI-PILOT, making them true city class cars for everyday use.

The facelifted eK Space and the first-ever Delica Mini are now ready to take on the new normal for simple people looking to find new hobbies out of these kei minivans. Like it or not, these traffic-friendly kei minivans are ready to get the job done, no rush at all.

Daihatsu Tanto FunCross

With the fourth-generation Daihatsu Tanto range gained their minor model change, a third entry was added and it's basically a direct rival to the Suzuki Spacia Gear; it's called the Daihatsu Tanto FunCross and it's the rugged version of the fourth-generation Daihatsu Tanto.

2023 Daihatsu Tanto FunCross
2023 Daihatsu Tanto FunCross

2023 Daihatsu Tanto FunCross
2023 Daihatsu Tanto FunCross

With prices starting at 1,721,500 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the Tanto FunCross is the rugged version of the fourth-generation Daihatsu Tanto that serves as the direct replacement for the recently discontinued Wake. Because this is basically a fourth-generation Tanto, the FunCross is about 35mm shorter than the Wake but similarly sized compared to the Suzuki Spacia Base, its main rival.

Beginning with the design, the FunCross features a rugged exterior with a tough front face and black claddings on the side and back. Although rugged, it's still considered by observers as "cute", just like the rest of the Tanto family.

2023 Daihatsu Tanto FunCross
2023 Daihatsu Tanto FunCross interior

On the interior, the FunCross's seats feature a camouflage design and some orange panelings that is in sync with its rugged design. Although they're somewhat show-off, the signature Tanto traits are still in this model; the signature pillarless door on the passenger side, space for four people, various seating arrangements, and various compartments to store your stuff, among many others. Word of advice, though, there are USB-C ports involved in this car so you better bring the right plug while on the go.

The Tanto FunCross runs on the DNGA architecture just like the fourth-generation Tanto range. Along with the rack-and-pinion steering, front MacPherson Strut suspension, ventilated disc front brakes, and leading trailing rear brakes, not to mention the torsion beams for FF models and 3-link rear suspension for 4WD models, the FunCross behaves pretty much like a Tanto despite its rugged looks, as expected. Although made for the great outdoors, it's still a city car that fits well with the Tokyo traffic.

Under the hood, the FunCross runs on the KF 660cc 3-cylinder DOHC 12V EFI engine in naturally aspirated or turbo flavors. Mated to a D-CVT, the fuel economy is up to 21.9km/L based on WLTC Mode standards, which is surprisingly more fuel efficient than the Suzuki Spacia Gear. That sounds like a win for Daihatsu.

Like most Tanto models, the Tanto FunCross features Smart Assist, a suite of active safety features ranging from collision avoidance, detection, driving load reduction, and parking. Along with its full LED headlamps, VSC, TRC, CTA, emergency stop signal, ABS, TAF body, SRS airbag, and ISOFIX, you got yourself a safe Tanto for all walks of life.

The Daihatsu Tanto FunCross may be more of a rugged version of the fourth-generation Tanto but when compared to the Suzuki Spacia Gear, looks like this one is the slightly clear winner because of its budget and fuel economy that begs to be driven for more. Although the rest of the Daihatsu Tanto lineup is now more fuel-efficient than the Suzuki Spacia family, don't call it a comeback just yet because...well, you get the point.

Suzuki Spacia Base

The second-generation Suzuki Spacia range, which consists of the normal version, the stylish Custom version, and the utilitarian Gear version, is now offered with a new purpose-built version known as the Spacia Base.

2023 Suzuki Spacia Base interior

2023 Suzuki Spacia Base

Priced at 1,394,000 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, which is slightly more expensive than the normal Spacia but cheaper to own than the Spacia Gear, this purpose-built version of the second-generation Spacia is built for almost everything life throws at everyone.

For starters, the styling is similar to the current Suzuki Spacia Custom but the grille and bumper accents are smothered in black instead of chrome while the rear side windows are covered in panels, giving the Spacia Base an impression of a blue-collar worker who is ready for full-time, all the time.

On the inside, the Spacia Base works and feels like every other Spacia you've come across but because this is a purpose-built version of the second-generation Spacia, it features an adjustable multi-board where users can turn the Spacia Base into either a mobile desk, a neat little sleeper, or for sorting out deliveries if you're in a mood for Uber Eats or something.

Like most Spacia variants, the Spacia Base runs on a HEARTECT platform and is powered by Suzuki's Mild Hybrid technology featuring an Integrated Starter Generator linked to a li-ion battery pack collaborating with its fuel-efficient 660cc engine. In its natural aspiration form and CVT gearbox, fuel economy is around 21.2km/L based on WLTC Mode standards.

The Spacia Base comes with the latest version of SUZUKI SAFETY SUPPORT, which is a suite of safety features such as Lane Departure Warning function, wandering alarm function, high beam assist, sign recognition function provided by its optional Omni-directional monitor camera package, advanced car departure notice function, dual sensor brake support, false start suppression, brake support, backward error start suppression, and more.

The Spacia Base is ready for almost everything thanks to its multi-board feature that gives users the flexibility to do whatever means necessary while on the go, such as conferencing while on the go, deliveries, camping trips, and more. A real blue-collar kei car hero the outgoing type of person needs.

Daihatsu Move Canbus (Gen 2)

Back in 2016, Daihatsu launched the Move Canbus, which is basically a kei minivan that is roughly as small as a Tanto but a fine choice for young Japanese females on the move. Now in its second generation, the new Canbus tries to continue where its predecessor left off with new features that will accommodate just about everyone looking for a dependable friend on wheels.

Priced at 1.496 million Yen plus additional costs, which is more expensive than its main rival, the Suzuki Wagon R Smile, the all-new Move Canbus is offered in two different styles; the single-colored Theory and the two-toned Stripes for those who want a little nod from the previous Canbus. Whichever Canbus you pick, the new model still looks fairly similar to the previous model it replaces and when you pack alongside them, you can't truly tell the difference between them.

2023 Daihatsu Move Canbus

While the new model features an awkwardly similar exterior design, the interior design has been heavily changed with a rather cozy dashboard design that works like a tray to place your stuff, especially your smartphone thanks to its optional wireless charging port. With the touchscreen monitor positioned above the dashboard and the speedo on the driver's side, the new interior is more functional than the previous model. In terms of comfort, it's still as roomy as its predecessor. It has four seats and it can be folded down for various situations, be it for work or for relaxation time, whichever floats your boat.

2023 Daihatsu Move Canbus
2023 Daihatsu Move Canbus Stripes

Now running on the DNGA platform, the new Canbus drives better and more smoothly compared to its predecessor. Under the hood, the new Canbus still runs on a 660cc 3-cylinder engine in natural aspiration and turbo configurations. Mated to a D-CVT gearbox, fuel economy is around 22.9km/L on the WLTC Mode scale, which is less efficient than the Suzuki Wagon R Smile as expected. On the bright side, it's more efficient than its bigger but cheaper sibling, the Tanto.

Having satisfied with its small sizing, DNGA platform, and improved NVH, the new Canbus is loaded with Daihatsu's new-generation Smart Assist that comes with up to 17 active safety features ranging from Collision Warning, Collision Avoidance Support Brake, false start suppression, line deviation warning and suppression control, stagger alarm, roadside deviation warning, sign recognition, AHB, ADB, ACC, LKC, Smart Panorama Parking Assist, and more. It's the safest Canbus ever made in times of the new normal.

Despite its stale looks and being outlasted by the Suzuki Smile, the all-new Daihatsu Canbus is ready to cater to typical Japanese people with its functional interior, improved driving, and tech that will make their day feel like it's the weekends. Feel free to relax with the all-new Canbus anytime you want.

Suzuki Lapin LC

The Suzuki Lapin was updated for the 2023 Model Year with some minor tweaks underneath and apart from that, it has spawned a posh addition to the Lapin range. It's called the Lapin LC and it's the poshest kei car young Japanese ladies can't wait to drive.

2023 Suzuki Alto Lapin LC

The new Lapin LC, priced at 1,409,100 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, is the poshest kei car in the Suzuki lineup, and those who want to have a little haute couture on their daily trip to the metropolis should consider this the ideal fashion accessory that matches the ladies' personal tastes.

While the styling is nearly identical to the normal Lapin, the LC features a different front view that pays tribute to the Suzuki Fronte 360 LC10 of the late 60s. The rear view dons a specially-made badge to distinguish it from the normal Lapin. It's no wonder why they called it the LC because it pays tribute to one of Suzuki's iconic kei cars, whatever the reason.

Inside, the LC features specially-made seats, a quilted roof that is fun to touch, a specially-made steering wheel with dark brown faux wood and wine-red labeling in the middle, and a choice of two center panels; simple and chic. Like the normal Lapin, the LC features useful conveniences to store stuff, charge their phones, and so on, living up to its role as the ideal fashion accessory on wheels.

Under the hood, the Lapin LC is powered by an R06A 660cc 3-cylinder petrol engine with ENE-CHARGE, ECO-COOL, and Idling Stop. Now mated to a CVT gearbox, the Lapin LC delivers 26.2kmpl of fuel economy based on WLTC Mode standards. Not bad for an unrivaled posh kei car that is also as enjoyable to drive on city roads.

In terms of safety, the Lapin LC features a wide array of safety systems under the Suzuki Safety Support banner, such as Dual Camera Brake Support, Reverse Brake Support, False Start Suppression, Lane Departure Warning, Sign Recognition, false start suppression, high beam assist, and the most useful feature of all, the omnidirectional view monitor.

The posh kei car from Suzuki is here to give Japanese ladies something to match their personality with its styling, interior, and fuel efficiency that will keep them going until nighttime unless they're rushing for a midnight sale somewhere.

Nissan Sakura

Back in the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan showcased their iMK Concept, which previews an electric kei car fit for production. Nissan fulfilled the iMK Concept's promise for a production model and christened it as...oh no...Nissan named their first-ever electric kei car after a popular anime magical girl character and that name will make everyone sing the beginning of the "Groovy" song.

Yes, the greatest fear has been confirmed. Nissan christened their first kei EV car as S-A-K-U-R-A. Sakura! Get it? It's called the Nissan Sakura and it starts at 2,399,100 Japanese Yen plus additional costs. It's a real shocker why Nissan named this car after a popular anime magical girl from the late 90s but whatever the reason, those who have past traumas over that name should persuade their families not to buy this car and instead go for the Mitsubishi eK X EV, judging from the fact that the Nissan Sakura is basically a Mitsubishi eK X EV underneath. Good luck stopping your family and friends from getting Little Miss Sakura because they're willing to buy it and humiliate you for all eternity. Cue the Groovy song.

The Sakura's styling is heavily inspired by the iMK Concept as seen at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, fulfilling the concept's promise of a production model. Although it's as small as the Dayz, the Sakura incorporates Nissan's new styling direction debuted from the Ariya SUV, meaning from every angle, it's truly a Nissan. No explanations are needed.

The Sakura's interior mimics the layout from the Ariya as well while the shift knob and the climate control are almost identical to the Mitsubishi eK X EV's, which is of course the Sakura's based from. In terms of creature comforts, the Sakura can fit up to four people and its boot space is best-in-class as Nissan claims, making it a dependable partner for all walks of life.

The Sakura is powered by an MM48 electric motor and a 20 kWh li-ion battery pack that powers its front wheels, generating 47kW of power output, 195Nm of torque output, and has a driving range of 180km in one full charge based on WLTC Mode standards. Apart from its electric drivetrain fit for city use, the Sakura has Rack & Pinion power steering, front strut suspension, rear torque arm 3-link suspension, front ventilated disc brakes, and rear Reading Trailing Drum brakes. For a kei electric car that weighs over a ton, it's still usable and easy to drive as expected.

In addition to the Leaf-inspired e-Pedal Step feature that allows users to drive and stop using one pedal, the Sakura features ProPilot advanced driving aids, ProPilot Parking, and 360° Safety Assist. These cutting-edge safety features are proof that Little Miss Sakura's ready to go home safe and sound for all of her loyalists to see.

With Little Miss Sakura arriving in Sakura New Town, looks like her fans are ready to place orders on her right away because, as expected, this is Sakura! What more do you want to ask about the electric car that was named after the anime character from the late 90s?! After all, those who have childhood traumas about Sakura should better turn away and buy its Mitsubishi eK X EV instead, which is slightly cheaper than the Sakura. Sadly no matter how hard you tried, the choice is clear. They will get the Sakura and sing the Groovy song non-stop.

Welcome to Sakura New Town! Oh, wait, wrong anime.

Mitsubishi eK X EV

Over a decade ago, Mitsubishi Motors jumped to the electric car revival with the i-MiEV. Fast forward to the year 2022, Mitsubishi Motors is back in the electric car business with the first-ever eK X EV.

What is the Mitsubishi eK X EV? Priced at 2.398M Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the first-ever eK X EV is more of an electrified version of the Mitsubishi eK X (pronounced cross) Kei car currently on sale, but don't let its familiar looks fool you because the eK X EV is a totally different breed compared to its ICE-powered equivalent.

The first tip goes to its interior because the electrified eK X's dashboard is surprisingly different from its ICE-powered equivalent. The sat-nav, for instance, looks like it was sourced from Nissan while the shift knob and the climate control feature a completely new design compared to the normal eK X. Despite the altered dashboard, the eK X EV can still accommodate up to four people and despite being slightly shorter compared to the normal eK X, it's still roomy as well.

As a kei electric car that fits well on Japan's narrow roads, the eK X EV is powered by an MM48 electric motor and a 20 kWh li-ion battery pack that powers its front wheels, generating 47kW of power output, 195Nm of torque output, and has a driving range of 180km in one full charge based on WLTC Mode standards. Although not fit for long weekend trips from your home to granny's old home, the eK X EV's electric powertrain has some purpose for city car use.

Weighing over a ton, the eK X EV is still a usable compact car fit for city use courtesy of its Rack & Pinion power steering, front strut suspension, rear torque arm 3-link suspension, front ventilated disc brakes, and rear Reading Trailing Drum brakes. Although not an exciting car to drive, it feels very easy to live with.

With safety as its top priority, the eK X EV features MI-PILOT semi-autonomous tech as well as an e-assist suite of safety features for the safest driving experience fit for a kei electric car.

The first-ever eK X EV wants to become the true successor of the now-legendary Mitsubishi i-MIEV, the kei electric car that spearheaded the electric car revival alongside the Nissan Leaf. The main question is, does this kei electric car got what it takes to follow the footsteps of the i-MiEV? Only time will tell but because the eK X EV is fit for Japan's new normal, looks like it's ready, like it or not.

With an MSRP of 998,800 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, the all-new Carol is the reinvention of a modern kei car that will take on the challenges of the new normal. Although it remains compact as it should be, the new Carol features an adorable new design that suits its size and personality. When you take it on a Sunday afternoon drive at Hakone, the new Carol has a charming personality that soothes away your stress all the way home.

The interior, meanwhile, raises a bountiful of questions, especially from those who have driven the previous model because the dashboard looks nearly identical to its predecessor. Despite the questionable dashboard, it still incorporates the "simple is best" mantra and it's slightly roomier than the previous model, meaning it still accommodates up to four people without worry. The same goes for the boot space as well.

Now running on the HEARTECT platform, the all-new Carol drives better than the previous model, and thanks to some reworking underneath, the minimum turning radius is now 4.4m Not only does it feel nicer to drive, it's soothing as well. It's easy to drive, hard to regret, even on a quiet Sunday drive in the woods.

The base Carol is powered by the R06A 660cc 3-cylinder DOHC 12V EPI engine with ENE-CHARGE that produces 46PS of power, 55Nm of torque and mated to a CVT, it delivers a fuel economy of 25.2kmpl based on WLTC Mode standards. However, to get the most out of the new model, you can opt in for the HYBRID variant which comes with a tiny WA04C motor and a Li-ion battery. This mild-hybrid powertrain grants you 27.7kmpl of fuel economy based on WLTC Mode standards.

True to its simple character, the new Alto comes with a Collision Damage Mitigation Brake and Pedal Mistake Sudden Start Suppression Device, making it a certified "Support Car S Wide".

So, if you need a ninth-generation Suzuki Alto but your nearest dealer is a Mazda dealer, the new Carol is within reach.

Daihatsu Atrai (S700/10)

The Daihatsu Atrai is a tiny kei multipurpose van that caters to every Japanese people's lifestyle wherever they see fit. Whether if it's made for working, outing, whatever floats their boats, the Atrai is the ideal partner they can rely on. Now on its 6th generation, the all-new Atrai is now the best Atrai they'll ever buy because of its added space and better dynamics that made it even more usable than before.

2022 Daihatsu Atrai

The all-new Daihatsu Atrai starts at 1,562,000 Japanese Yen plus additional costs and it's about time they've regenerated the Atrai after a long time. While it was worth the wait, the all-new Atrai features a more boxy design and larger dimensions compared to the previous model it replaces, becoming a four-number kei van fit for all walks of life. Although bigger than the previous model, the all-new Atrai is still small and easy to squeeze through Japan's tightest hotspots.

2022 Daihatsu Atrai interior

Thanks to its added size, the new interior is roomier than the previous model, although this van is good for four people, which is ideal for families with one or two kids. Although there's nothing special about the dashboard, apart from the fact that you can slap a touch screen to it at an additional cost, the boot is where the Atrai shines. With the rear seats folded down, there are countless possibilities you can think of with the new Atrai. You can turn it into a nice little sleeper, your workplace away from work, a campsite, and so on. There's so much you can do in such a tiny little van.

There's more, the all-new Atrai comes with class-first features such as dual power-sliding doors, keyless entry, and a welcome open function that can open its doors automatically when the owner approaches near the Atrai.

If you want something unique, you can opt-in for a Deck Van variant, which made its comeback in this new model. It's a pickup-esque variant that is capable of carrying up to 250kg of load at its bed.

2022 Daihatsu Atrai

For the first time in an FR kei cab-over van, the all-new Atrai is mated with a CVT gearbox in place of the previous model's 4AT, which sucks for some drivers but whatever. The 660cc petrol engine and the CVT gearbox delivered an impressive fuel economy of 14.7km/L based on WLTC Mode standards in both FR and 4WD layouts.

Being tiny do has its upsides in Japan's driving conditions and because of its 4.2m turning radius and its DNGA platform underneath, it feels very easy to drive. However, if you are opting for the 4WD variant, there's so much to enjoy driving the all-new Atrai everywhere because of its three driving modes; 2WD, 4WD AUTO, and 4WD LOCK. Handy if you're traversing through dirt while in the woods, hunting, or fishing.

In the issue of safety, the all-new Atrai comes with Smart Assist, which consists of 14 advanced active safety features that will keep it safe everywhere.

The sixth-generation Atrai is now the easiest and the most usable Atrai you'll ever buy despite the CVT gearbox that made it feel regular. With its impressive boot space, the return of the Deck Van variant, bigger dimensions, and the DNGA platform that resulted in better dynamics, it's ready to take on the new normal in a way unexpected for a tiny van. The more your know.
