Fifth-generation Subaru Forester (SK9/E)

The Subaru Forester is one of the forerunners of the crossover utility vehicle craze since the Toyota RAV4 and the Toyota Harrier and while it was basically a bigger Impreza, the Forester is an all-rounder thanks to Subaru's legendary AWD powerhouse that keeps it going no matter what's going on ahead. For the fifth-generation model, the Forester's taking a radical new approach for crossover shoppers as it's going to the direction that will make speedo boys crying back to their mommies.

2019 Subaru Forester
2019 Subaru Forester
At first glance, the all-new, fifth-generation Subaru Forester looks slightly different than the previous model but believe it or not, this is an all-new model so everything around here is almost as fresh as freshly picked tomatoes in the sunshine and while Subaru promises to be their most promising Forester ever, it isn't the most promising for speedo boys elsewhere because with this new model, turbocharging and manual are now out of the equation, meaning the new model is now offered with a choice of a naturally aspirated 2.5L boxer-4 engine and the first-ever 2.0L e-Boxer hybrid powertrain. More with that later on but first, let's observe the design.

At the design flow, the new Forester looks almost the same as the old model, judging from the front view, but on the back, it's almost like a botched up Kia Sorento R at some point, making it a clear approach that their new model looks different from the old one, so job done. Did you know that in the X-BREAK model, it features black gloss finish frame, black-finish 18-in. wheels and rear roof spoiler as well as orange accents on the black underguards and roof rail mounts.

2019 Subaru Forester interior

Peeking through the interior, the new Forester is starting to shape like the Impreza's and because it now runs on Subaru Global Platform, like from the Impreza, it's now surprisingly bigger than the previous model, meaning there's more room for granny and her friends for a weekend trip at Ocean Shores and Leavenworth. Being a five-seater, it only works if you are in a middle of a one-child policy, but because this is the kind of crossover your granny's friend drove every other day, it works really rather well, now that you mentioned personal experience from the previous model. It's now surprisingly dirt-resistant as well so there's no problem getting dirty while getting inside after in a middle of a rainy day at Oregon. Benefiting the new platform is the added space on the back that provides over five hundred litres of storage volume, meaning there's more stuff for some stuff granny bought at the grocery store or stuff for their next retreat at the province.

2019 Subaru Forester

Back to what I said, the new Forester throws turbocharging and manual out of the equation, which is bad news for speedo boys everywhere, and in its place, it's now powered with a choice of a naturally aspirated 2.5L boxer-4 engine and the first-ever 2.0L e-Boxer hybrid powertrain, all mated with Subaru's Lineartronic CVT with a Manual Mode setting. Beginning on the FB25 engine, it now comes with direct fuel injection and higher compression as well as active valve control system on the exhaust. It now generates 184PS of power and 239Nm of torque, which is less than the Mazda CX-5, a crossover that is somewhat more enjoyable to own than this. Under the new WLTC Mode regulations, it returns with a 13.2kmpl fuel economy which is also less than the CX-5 as well.

The Advance model features an FB20 boxer engine coupled with a 10kW MA1 electric motor and li-ion battery and with this new e-Boxer hybrid powertrain, which combines boxer engine with electric technology, it promises 14kmpl of fuel economy under the new WLTC Mode regulations, which isn't bad as should say. Disappointing it maybe, the upside with the Forester Advance with e-Boxer is in any case your granny's friend forgot her phone at your home, she can come back to pick it up and then go home without worrying about fuel for the next day she'll visit your home again and again and again. That's personal experience done it right.

After getting to know the performance, how about driving? Since it runs on the SGP, the new Forester promises to be more refined than the previous model, meaning the handling is pretty much relatively superior compared to the old one and there's one pinky-lifting thing that will have you noticed. There is now Active Torque Vectoring, which is the same as you get from the WRX S4, the WRX STi, and the Levorg, and coupled that with Vehicle Dynamics Control, the Forester is as subtle to drive as carrying a bag of rice you bought from an Asian store with both hands.

What's a Forester be without X-Mode? X-Mode utilizes the the engine, transmission shift pattern, Active AWD front/rear clutch force, brakes and the Vehicle Dynamics Control to handle all kinds of situations and in the case of some models like the X-BREAK, there is a dual-mode version of X-Mode that offers Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes to make it more capable when things get rough.

Since Subaru is now synonymous with safety, the new Forester comes with EyeSight that includes Automatic Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Pre-Collision Throttle Management and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. The EyeSight Safety Plus, meanwhile, adds more safety tech such as Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection, Adaptive Driving Beam, Smart Rear View Mirror, Front View Monitor, and Side View Monitor, giving the new Forester a more safer drive good enough for your granny's friend to enjoy what it's like to be in the most high-tech Subaru to date.

Should you buy one? The new Forester stats at 2,808,000 Japanese Yen, which is surprisingly cheaper to own than the Mazda CX-5 powered by a 2.5L engine, while the hybrid-powered Forester Advance starts at 3,099,600 Yen. The petrol one won't arrive dealerships until mid-July while the Advance arrives by September but either way, you'll be too late to have one anyway, considering the skyrocketing waitlist over the new model. Still, the new Forester disappoints speedo boys with the removal of the turbo and manual variants from the previous model but for some relatives you know had a previous Forester from the start, the new model shapes the Forester into a more generous crossover fit enough for trips to Leavenworth, Ocean Shores, or Oregon, and then come back home with some fuel left for work, making it a more rewarding experience and with safety tech's at hand, the Forester puts everyone inside it first and that's something Subaru's trying to tell to the world that they're trying to copy Volvo's safety success story and while it sounds too deep, the new model can trigger some mixed reactions on its first day and that was the trivia for the day.

2015 Subaru Forester tS

2015 Subaru Forester tS

Following the launch of the recently facelifted 2015MY Subaru Forester in Japan, the folks from STi offered a limited-edition Forester tS exclusively for the Japanese. Just 300 units will be made until April 2015 and for this limited edition model, it uses the 2.0XT model as its basis, meaning this variant comes with the same FA20 DIT engine mated with Subaru's Lineartronic CVT gearbox with Manual Mode operated via paddle shifters.

The outside features a more sportier aerodynamics as well as some STi and tS badges on it. There's also an exclusive WR Blue Mice offered on this limited-edition model as well.

2015 Subaru Forester tS interior

Since it's based on the facelifted Forester, you can expect the same brand-new interior as the normal Forester but for the tS model, it features sportier black and red front seats with the STi logo in it, an STi push engine switch, a speedo that reads up to 260kmh, STi shift lever, STi steering wheel, and everything STi sprinkled on the interior to match its sporty personality.

This special model comes with additional improvements done by STi such as the flexible tower bars, flexible draw stiffeners, brembo 17-inch ventilated disc brakes, STi front struts and rear dampers, Transmission Control Unit, CVT Oil Cooler, and rebooted ECU.

Like the facelifted Forester, it still comes with Subaru's Eyesight Ver. 2 that has a feature that automatically brakes in a near-collision situation.

It's priced at 4,350,000 Japanese Yen (around $44,000) but remember, it's available only in Japanese market and up to 300 units produced until April 2015.

Subaru teases 2015MY facelifts of Impreza, XV, and Forester

Teaser image for 2015 Subaru Impreza, XV, and Forester

Subaru revealed a rather irrelevant teaser for the upcoming 2015 facelifts of Impreza (in Sport hatch and G4 sedan), XV crossover, and Forester crossover SUV. Although no further details are told about the upcoming facelifts of these models, the teasers said COMING SOON. That's it.

Wait...when they said that there's going to be a facelift on the Subaru Impreza Sport hatchback and Impreza G4 sedan, are they referring to this?

Expect these facelifts to come with Subaru's breakthrough Eyesight Ver. 3 found in the Levorg. Eyesight Ver. 3 integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning, among many others. You can also expect heavily revised interiors as well, slightly enhanced powertrain, and some of it.

VIDEO: Titans attack on this latest Subaru Forester ad

Well that was quite an unexpected turn for this latest Subaru Forester ad aired in Japan as for this commercial, the Subaru Forester takes on the unexpected turn with the encounter of those weird-looking...TITANS!

This commercial is a collaboration with Attack On Titan (日本名:進撃の巨人), which I think to be one of the best anime shows of 2013 with the live-action movie coming next year, and this is quite a surprise to see a Japanese car commercial featuring nods from Japanese anime. If only the Scouting Legion would see this coming...

Subaru Forester Fourth Generation (SJ)

2013 Subaru Forester

Hard to admit it that the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander we looked that last month really do like Free Willy in a big way but now Subaru pulled out their trump card by regenerating their crossover, the Forester, to a whole new level. Nice new look, looks better than the new Outlander in every tangible way. Also, the new, fourth generation Forester, has something that the new Outlander had; the added grunt.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander has a choice of a 2.0L engine and a 2.4L engine. This new Subaru Forester has two engine types; a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine called the FB20 and the brand new FA20 DIT engine first seen on the facelifted 2013 Legacy...

It's Subaru's first SUV to have EyeSight version 2 safety system that has a feature that automatically brakes in a near-collision situation...

FB20 models come with either a 6-speed MT or improved Lineartronic CVT while FA20 DIT variants known as the 2.0XT come exclusively with a CVT nonsense, just like the Legacy...

And it's served with Symmetrical AWD...

2013 Subaru Forester interior

So, how did Subaru invested just to regenerate the Forester to a totally different crossover that feels a bit civilized? Well, when you think about it, this new Forester doesn't seem to be so half-bad but sadly there's no soul, there's no heart, and it's not that all desperately impractical. Look at the interior for instance, it seems that it's straight from the Impreza, just like the previous model which has the familiar interior. Although I may think that this is is the bulkier brother of the Impreza, the Forester seems to work if you're a soccer mom taking her kids to school, then went out for grocery shopping, and for work, and lots of stuff. However, because this is the new model, I think that Subaru tries to shrug off the soccer mom image but no. It's still a soccer mom car pumped up.

A new Forester with the FB20 engine mated to a 6-speed MT would be fine but it isn't a serious car, it doesn't have much sense to use it on an everyday but for the one with the FB20 mated to a Lineartronic CVT, that's made for everyday use. CVT's are made for better fuel economy and smooth riding but it has the canal boat-like feeling every time when you floor it. If you have the same thought on the 2.0XT model, which the exterior can be differentiated by a shouty front face, I'd guess I'd basically plug my ears with headphones rather than hearing the canal boat sounds of the CVT mode or if I switch the Lineartronic CVT in 6-speed manual mode, it wasn't so bad. It doesn't feel like a Justy of yesteryears and it doesn't always hum to the sound of Chicago's Saturday in the Park.

Here's the thing, if you're careful, the new Forester with the FB20 engine and idling stop combined will get you up to 15.2kmpl of fuel consumption. The fuel consumption of the Forester 2.0XT (the one with the FA20 DIT engine on it) though, will be approximately 13.2kmpl. Hang on a minute, a 15.2kmpl on the new Forester with the FB20 engine and idling stop is about the same as the fuel economy of the new Mitsubishi Outlander's 2.0L engine with AS&G feature.

2013 Subaru Forester

It's still a crossover made for the outdoorsmen. You can drive it offroad and you can make it dirty thanks to its SYMMETRICAL AWD that adorned most Subarus for years but now, there's a new feature which is a first for this new model. It's the X-MODE system and this new feature enhances the stability of the new Forester in tough terrain. Whether if you're on gravel, sand, or snow, the X-MODE lets the engine, transmission, and VDC controlled cooperatively and with the X-MODE's hill descent control, it can maintain the same speed while driving down a steep hill.

Pricing? The new Forester will cost you about 2,089,500 Yen, that's cheaper than the new Outlander and that makes it a great value. Wait, hang on a minute....did I say...that's 337,500 Yen less than the new Outlander? Spoilers! But still, it's not the River Song type of spoilers, this is the bargain of the holiday season. With that affordability, I think this is the best choice for those who can't afford the new Outlander.

Better still, this crossover is all about being a somebody rather than a nobody...

A special web anime movie created in collaboration between Fuji Heavy Industries and GAINAX

Of all the automobile manufacturers created web specials that made car enthusiasts interested for more such as BMW Korea's BMW Meets Truth starring Rain, Lexus CT 200h's Dark Ride, Toyota Mark X Samurai Code drama starring Koichi Sato, True Power Should Be Shared starring the Aston Martin Rapide, Audi A1's The Next Big Thing starring Justin Timberlake, Kia Motors' The Lotze Identity starring Kim Joo-Hyuk, Nissan Note's Teinenpi Shoujo Heidi, and other web specials made possible by automobile manufacturers, it seems that Fuji Heavy Industries joined the bandwagon for a very special web special to keep fans of the Subaru brand alive and kicking by offering a short anime film titled Houkago no Pleiades (日本名:放課後のプレアデス)

Subaru and GAINAX presents Houkago no Pleiades

Created in collaboration between Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (behind the Subaru brand), and GAINAX, this special web movie made its debut in February 1 ,2011 and wow! This is the first time a famous Japanese carmaker team up with a famous Japanese anime studio for a surprise treat for Scooby fans all over Japan. I guess its true that Love is what makes a Subaru, a Subaru, especially this web special!

When I first peeked on this web special, it was like OH MY! This web special is a sweet as a full tank of 100-octane gasoline! As a web special created in partnership between Fuji Heavy Industries and GAINAX, there are some Subaru-related references on this 4-part short anime film;

1) The main character, Subaru (すばる) is from her namesake, the brand itself.

2) The opening of a door using a key is somewhat like you're turning the ignition key on

3) Hear the engine start-up on the magic staff? That's the sound of the boxer engine, the pinnacle of Subaru engineering.

4) The shafts Subaru, Aoi, Itsuki, Hikaru, and Nanako used were derived from Subaru models. Look closely at their shafts on this short film and it has something similar from the Subaru trademark grille.

Subaru's shaft was derived from the Fifth-generation Subaru Legacy
2010 Subaru Legacy Touring Wagon

Itsuki's shaft was based on the Forester
2011 Subaru Forester

Aoi's shaft was based on the third-generation Subaru Impreza
2011 Subaru Impreza 1.5i-S Limited (Special Edition)

Nanako's shaft was based on Subaru's Touring 7-seater, the Exiga
2009 Subaru Exiga

Hikaru's shaft was based on Subaru's latest compact, the Trezia
2011 Subaru Trezia

5) The areas marked on the bus stop were the names of areas Subaru manufacturing plants located, most notably, Ota, Gunma.

My impressions about this Subaru x GAINAX collaboration short film is tremendously superb. Two worlds combined to create something sweeter than a full tank of 100-octane petrol! Most Scooby fans wowed upon peeking at the web special, Houkago no Pleiades. This short anime film reprises the new Subaru slogan "Confidence in Motion" to a completely new level. I guess Houkago no Pleiades is the automotive web special that ends all automotive web specials since 2009's Nissan Note Teinenpi Shoujo Heidi and 2010's Toyota Mark X Samurai Code drama!

Thank you Fuji Heavy Industries and GAINAX for making this short anime film possible! I guess the words "Love is what makes a Subaru, a Subaru" came to reality! (Applause)

Forester STi is back! (but it's Japan-only)

2011 Subaru Forester tS

Finally, for after three years, the third-generation Subaru Forester finally gets a STi variant (for a limited time), but unfortunately, that thing's for sale only in Japan...

Called the Forester tS (tS as in tuned by STi), this STi-tuned version of the Forester can be a thrilling experience for those who think the Forester S Edition is not their type. Limited to 300 units and its available until March 2011, do you think someone who are lucky enough to feel the rebirth of the Forester STi?

Key Points

1) On Exterior side, the Forester tS is equipped with the tS badge on the grille, STi badge on the back, STi sports muffler, 17-inch STi rims, STi front bumpers, and STi rear bumpers. These exterior features are a sure thing to call this sporty.

2) On the Interior side, the Forester tS offers black Alcantara seats with the STi logo on it, Sports Luminescent Cluster, STi steering wheel, tS side seal plate, sporty shift lever with the STi logo on it, STi engine start stop button colored in red, and a special key cover. This sporty interior is not quite to be called best, but it's fine, I can tell.

2011 Subaru Forester tS interior

3) Other equipments include front strut coil spring, rear damper coil springs, flexible tower bar front, support front, flexible draw stiffener rear, and flexible support rear.

4) Available in four colors; WR Blue Mica, Satin White Pearl, Obsidian Black Pearl, and Steel Silver Metallic.

My Comment: Do you think MotorImage Pilipinas will bring the Forester tS? I think not because this STi-tuned Forester is for Japanese customers only and limited on 300 units available until March 2011.

More info (Japanese only):

Subaru "Third-Generation" Forester - Minor Change

Since September 2010, Fuji Heavy Industries just released the new generation Boxer engine, which is the first in more than two decades. Torque output has been increased by horsepower remains stale. The first car to be outfitted with this new-generation Subaru Boxer engine is none other than...

The facelifted third-generation Subaru Forester!

Subaru's next-generation Boxer Engine is now on the third-generation Subaru Forester as the third-generation of Subaru's crossover utility vehicle finally deserves a mid-life facelift, a first after three years of existence since its debut in December 2007.

The only thing changed on the exterior is the grille, only this time, it looks more similar to the Subaru Impreza XV. If you step inside the interior, the major changes happened in the third-generation Forester's minor facelift is the new climate control and upgraded instrumental cluster.

With that new dashboard, the Forester's minor change is truly a a step forward of being updated especially the Forester's latest nip tuck gets the new-generation Subaru Boxer engine.

The new FB20 DOHC 16-Valve Dual AVCS engine for the new Forester garners a power output of 148PS, torque output of 20kg・m, and the fuel economy of about 15.0 - 15.2km/L. It seems that Fuji Heavy Industries made the new type of boxer engine a bit economical for its increased fuel economy, and its fit to Japan's "eco-car genzei" system. The EJ20 engine for the 2.0XT variant remains stale, meaning nothing's change to the 2.0L Boxer Turbo engine that casts a power output of 230PS, torque output of 32.5kg・m, and the fuel economy of about 12.2 - 13.0km/L. The Forester can be equipped with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed Automatic transmission based on the customers' tastes.

The Forester S Edition

Making a special addition the facelifted Forester is the new Forester S Edition. The S Edition is equipped with the high-performance EJ25 DOHC Turbo engine that has the power output of 263PS, torque output of 35.4kg・m, and the fuel economy of 9.8km/L. On the outside, you can check on the rear view and you'll see the S-Edition badge on it. On the inside, special S Edition seats in two-tone color, and special S Edition instrumental panel inspired by the fifth-generation Subaru Legacy. There's also a paddle shifters (5-speed automatic) armed on the new S Edition. The S Edition is the best Forester variant for Scooby enthusiasts.

My thoughts about the Forester:

With the new boxer engine added on the Forester's latest nip/tuck, I still got a feeling that the latest minor change pretty much about the same as the previous pre-facelift model. The S Edition, on the other hand, is mostly a cool addition to the Forester, ever since its special preview at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show at Sydney, Australia. The S Edition's 2.5L boxer turbo engine and the 5-speed automatic with paddle shifters made this a fun-to-drive variant. I hope that MotorImage Pilipinas got the memo and bring the Forester facelift with the new boxer engine available. What we still need is the Boxer Diesel engine like the ones in Europe but no, this engine is Euro 5 compliant and we can't get it because we are in a Euro2/3 compliant country. With the Outlander retreated from the Philippine market, guess this would be our suitor of choice.
