2021 marks the start of the newest zero-emission motorsport series made by the minds that brought us the Formula E. Welcome to Extreme E, the zero-emission extreme offroad racing competition where teams from all walks of the world are driving an all-electric extreme offroader through the world's harshest terrains, most are impacted by climate change.
How does Extreme E work? 9 teams, with one male driver and one female driver each, are clashing through five cross country events from the Middle East to South America. They will first take on two qualifying rounds. The top three qualifiers will make it to the Semi Finals, where two will make it to the finals. The middle three will take on the Crazy Race where the first placer will have a spot on the finals. The bottom three, meanwhile, will have to make do in a Shootout race with no progression in sight.
During the race, each driver can activate the Hyperdrive boost, which is similar to Formula E's Attack Mode, which gives them power increase for a set amount of time.
The top two finishers at the Semi Final and the Crazy Race winner will be the ones racing in the Finals and whoever crosses the finish line wins.
The inaugural Extreme E's list of teams include RXR, X44, Acciona Sainze XE Team, Andretti, JBXE, Hispano Suiza Xite, Segi Chip Ganassi Racing, ABT Cupra, and Veloce.
That's the basics of Extreme E. Now onto the first-ever Extreme E race which took place at the scorching sands of Al Ula, Saudi Arabia for the Desert X Prix.
After their intense qualifying performances, the X44, Acciona Sainz, and RXR made it to the Semis, while the Andretti United, Hispano Suiza Xite, and JBXE made it to the Crazy Race, and the bottom trio of the qualifiers, SEGI TV CGR, ABT CUPRA, and Veloce Racing, ended up on the Shootout, the one I'm not covering on but I do heard that the former two got involved in a crash during the Shootout.
Anyway, the X44 and RXR teams, which are surprisingly run by Formula 1 greats such as Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, former Mercedes-AMG rival teammates of course, emerged as the top two finishers of the Semi Finals and the Andretti team won the Crazy Race, meaning they are going all out on the Finals.

At the end of the Finals, the Rosberg X Racing team, comprising of Molly Taylor and rallycross driver Johan Kristoffersson, won the inaugural race of the first-ever Extreme E. History has been made by them. Meanwhile, the Andretti United XE, comprising of Catie Munnings and Timmy Hansen, finished 2nd, and Team X44, with rally legend Sebastien Loeb and Cristina Gutierrez behind the wheel, finished 3rd.
That is the end of the inaugural Extreme E race, the Desert X Prix. The next event of the Extreme E will take place at Dakar on the 29th to 30th of May, 2021.
