Mazda Demio is Japan's 2014-2015 COTY

It's official, after numerous votes from the judges, the winner for Japan's 2014-2015 Car of the Year goes to the recently-launched, fourth-generation Mazda Demio (known as the Mazda2 in the world market), beating the likes of the Mercedes C-Class W205 and the BMW i3. With its 1.3L petrol and 1.5L diesel engines available as well as its innovative design, legendary Mazda dynamics, and its reasonable price, it's good to know that the new Demio is a sure winner to the home crowd.

2nd: Mercedes-Benz C-Class - 404 points
3rd: BMW i3 - 340 points

Fourth-generation Mazda Demio/2 (DJ)

When the Mazda Demio was in its third-generation, it became the first car in Mazda history to introduce the game-changing SKYACTIV Technology which combines efficiency and performance that most drivers want. So far, SKYACTIV Technology was applied in most models ranging from the CX-5 crossover, Axela compact sedan and hatch, and the Atenza executive saloon and wagon.

2015 Mazda Demio

Now, the first Mazda that introduced SKYACTIV Technology to the world has been regenerated with a new and improved style that demands to be a top-seller in this category. The folks from Mazda really had high hopes into selling this new, fourth-generation, Demio globally because of its fuel efficiency and performance SKYACTIV Technology delivers and I strongly believe on that...almost.

So, the brand new Demio (known in the world market as the Mazda 2), what's changed for the first Mazda to introduce such technology? Keeping in tune with the times, the new Demio employs the carmaker's KODO -Soul in Motion- design philosophy and it was heavily inspired from the Hazumi Concept from the Geneva Motor Show last Spring. With its new look, looks like the new Demio really stands out being a city car in its own right. Most of your neighbors from the suburbs or from the rural area you were living on think you are something special, even your college buddies as well.

2015 Mazda Demio interior
2015 Mazda Demio interior
On the inside, the new Demio was heavily influenced by the interior design of the latest Mazda Axela and it's now roomier than the last one thanks to its wheelbase that is now 80mm longer. Sounds good to us but if you're getting busy while getting caught in a traffic gridlock, don't fret because the new Demio comes with MAZDA CONNECT where, at the turn of the dial, allows you to stay connected with some apps, navigation, and entertainment. There has been some software changes to the MAZDA CONNECT to make it more user-friendly than ever and on the new Demio, you don't have to get bored while stuck on the traffic jam.

Thanks to its longer wheelbase and length, boot space is now decent than the last one but if you need more, you can fold the rear seats as well. Mazda really knows that the added space is just one of the trump cards the new Demio had and that really sets them apart from its rivals such as the Toyota Vitz, Nissan March, Honda Fit, and the Mitsubishi Mirage.

2015 Mazda Demio
Now, the main course for the Demio is its performance and two engines are available as of now: a P3-VPS 1.3L SKYACTIV-G 4-cylinder DOHC Miller Cycle engine and the newly-developed S5-DPTS 1.5L SKYACTIV-D 4-cylinder diesel turbo engine. The 1.3L petrol model with be mated with a 6-speed auto and a 5-speed manual while the top-of-the-line 1.5L diesel model can be fitted with a 6-speed auto or 6-speed manual.

Since Mazda believes that its diesel variant is going to be top pick, let's talk more on this engine. This Euro-6 compliant engine has a power output of 105PS and 250Nm of torque output (220Nm for the 6MT model). Fuel economy for the diesel? About 30km/L on the JC08 Mode scale.

Since there are no JDM compacts with diesel engines, the new Demio is a class of its own with no competition but since this sounds unfair, let's compare this fuel economy with the Europeans. Let's remember, 30.0km/L of fuel economy came from its 1.5L SKYACTIV-D engine.

When compared against a Peugeot 208 with a 1.6L e-HDi engine equipped, that's about .3km/L short. Against the Citroen C3 with the same 1.6L diesel engine and the new Demio is 2.2km/L more. VW , Polo with the 1.4L TDI BlueMotion Technology? The Demio beats by a gap of 0.6km/L. So, there you go. That new 1.5L SKYACTIV-D engine on the new Demio poses an even greater threat to the Europeans...by about 2 out of 3, as a theory.

Okay, we had enough about that engine but what about the 1.3L SKYACTIV-G? Let's cut this short because there isn't much time to talk more. Anyway, the 1.3L SKYACTIV-G engine develops 92PS of power and 121Nm of torque. Fuel economy is a decent 24.6km/L on the JC08 Mode scale.

What about handling? The old Demio tries to fight against its catastrophic understeer but arguably, it tries to hold you back. It's not quite as dynamic as its Euro rivals. So, what Mazda did is improve it by giving it MacPherson Struts on the front and thanks to its extensive use of the SKYACTIV-BODY and SKYACTIV-CHASSIS, the new Demio has its handling slightly improved. It feels good to drive but not quite matched to its Euro rivals, maybe because they've added 40kg of weight I presumed. Despite all this, the new Demio still has the Mazda factor, being a fun car to drive that guaranteed a small smile on your face and with all of this improvements to the handling department, I'm glad to say that this is probably a good contender to the list of cars Gran Turismo 6 should put. Why there are no racing video games of today featuring Mazda cars with SKYACTIV Technology and Kodo design on it? Are they afraid?

Should you buy this? The new Demio starts at a reasonably-priced 1,350,000 Japanese Yen (around $14,000) for the 13C model while the XD model (the one with the 1.5L diesel on it) starts at 1,782,000 Japanese Yen (around $18,000). Although this is more expensive than the Toyota Vitz, Mitsubishi Mirage, Honda Fit, and the Nissan March, this is still one of the most advanced hatchbacks from Japan at this moment in time.

In Japan, sales of petrol models will start on the 26th of September while diesel models will be on Mazda, Mazda Efini, and Mazda Autozam dealerships on the 23rd of October, and 4WD models will arrive this December.

Available colors: Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Aluminum Metallic, Meteor Gray Mica, Jet Black Mica, Soul Red Premium Metallic, Titanium Flash Mica, Blue Reflex Mica, Dynamic Blue Mica, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, and Smokey Rose Mica.

Welcome Back: 2011 Mazda 2

Eco Car challenge!!

As I'm sure you know, this is the third-generation Mazda Demio. Yes I know. It was launched in Japan since July 2007 and a few years later, it was sold worldwide, even the USA and in the Philippines. It was facelifted since the summer of 2011. It was feature on the previous Forza 3 game. So, why then am I now driving it again?

Because I like it. This Mazda Demio is all about zoom-zoom concentrated in every aspect of this car. The Nissan Micra/March K13 I drove in the past when I got my hands on Forza 4 is just somewhat a so-so for me despite the fact that I'm impressed that I drove the Nissan Micra/March K13 but in every tangible way, the Mazda 2/Demio is somewhat better than the Nissan Micra/March K13 and most of all, it's better to look at.

This car is what Mazda made, except that now what players do to their Mazda Demio is outfit it with aero parts courtesy of Mazda specialist, AutoExe.

Oreimo star in a reasonably priced Demio (and Axela)

Kuroneko's the star in a reasonably priced Mazda!

Seriously, it happened again at some newspaper ad for Chiba Mazda dealership and this time, it's Kuroneko's turn. Another Oreimo star in a reasonably priced Mazda, just like Kirino Kousaka from last time.

You could thank the guys who worked at the Chiba Mazda dealership teaming up with Oreimo characters to promote new Mazda models, especially the new Mazda Demio and the new Mazda Axela with SKYACTIV Technology.

Ambitious...but rubbish...

The Enemy from Without...

2012 Daihatsu Move Custom

2012 Mazda Demio

2012 Daihatsu Mira e:S

So, the Daihatsu Mira e:S has arrived and claimed the title of being the world's most fuel efficient gasoline-fed car today because of the record breaking 30.km/L in Japan's JC08 mode scale, meaning that's 32.0km/L in 10-15 Mode scale, making it higher than the Mazda Demio 13-SKYACTIV's 30.km/L fuel economy and the fifth-generation Daihatsu Move's 27.0km/L.

Didn't realize that the records really put a slam in the fronts of the Daihatsu Move and the Mazda Demio because it the world of fuel efficiency, the higher the fuel economy, the better, but we're not talking about hybrid cars, we're talking about gasoline-fed cars. With today's gas prices, people are looking for fuel-efficient cars but they prefer more about gasoline-fed cars because that's the norm. Thanks to the fuel efficiency of the new Daihatsu Mira e:S, it seems that someone finally found their new partner on the road.

This is how you call it "The Enemy from Without" and no, we're not referring to something from an old video game called Incredible Crisis. We are referring about the arrival of the Daihatsu Mira e:S because of the fuel efficiency that puts the new Daihatsu Move and the Mazda Demio SKYACTIV to shame.

Misaki Ito's Demio Days

Song played on my Personal BGM: Hello by Naoto Intiraymi
From the album: Hello

Back when the second-generation Mazda Demio was released in August 2002 and exported worldwide for the first time as the Mazda 2, this compact car was a game-changing compact car designed for young customers worldwide that depends on their tastes for design, quality, and performance. For those who recognize the second-generation Demio, what is the only memory you know about the second-generation Mazda Demio? Oh yes, Japanese actress Misaki Ito. Some people prefer the second-generation Demio because of Misaki Ito, you know what I'm saying?

!

If a Japanese actress like Misaki Ito is playing Gran Turismo 5 on her Playstation 3, this is what her car she's driving but the car Misaki Ito's driving on Gran Turismo 5 is the Mazda Demio Sport '03.

Misaki Ito in London, United Kingdom

Misaki Ito in Madrid, Spain

Suppose that Misaki Ito's playing GT5 and when she gets all Bronze trophies at the [National B License] at [License Tests], she'll get her Demio as seen on Japanese TV when she was an endorser from years 2003 to 2006. Most GT5 players feel like Misaki Ito when they get inside the second-generation Demio.

Having Misaki Ito's Demio returned on GT5, this was listed as a Standard Tier car, not to mention Scott Pippen's Demio (Mazda Demio GL-X '99) also returned as a Standard Tier car too. As told, Scott Pippen's Demio is the first-generation Demio while Misaki Ito's Demio is the second-generation Demio, as shown from those Japanese TV commercials. However, what we're talking about here is Misaki Ito's Demio (Mazda Demio Sport '03), we'll just leave Scott Pippen's Demio (Mazda Demio GL-X '99) to later posts.

The Mazda Demio Sport is powered with the ZY-VE (1498cc 4-cylinder DOHC) engine that produces a power output of 112HP/6000RPM, torque output of 103ft-lb/4000rpm, 1080kg in weight, and the fuel economy of 17km/L (about 40MPG). It is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. When Misaki Ito got her hands on the Mazda Demio Sport, she'll max it out to the highest power output of 271HP/6900rpm, 206ft-lb/6900rpm of torque output, and 918kg of weight. (Results may vary depending on the owner)

Because it is a Standard Tier car, only rear wings are allowed to personalize Misaki Ito's Demio but when it comes to exterior color, she can choose whatever she wants (as long as the paint matches the ones from the Japanese TV commercials). If Misaki Ito participates at the [World Compact Car Race] via [Seasonal Events], she needs to tone her Demio down for 450PP eligibility but when it comes to tire selection, she can choose whatever she wants but she can be interested in Sports Tires and Racing Tires.

Gran Turismo 5 players who are driving the Mazda Demio Sport may react that they feel like Misaki Ito because this Japanese actress was in the commercials for the second-generation Mazda Demio. Like Misaki Ito, she can find the Mazda Demio Sport more enjoyable at all circumstances. If she adds a [Fully Customizable Transmission], [Adjustable LSD], and a [Fully Customizable Suspension] on her shopping list for her Demio Sport, she can experiment with various settings to find out which setting fits her Demio when it comes to high speed corners, technical courses, countering under-steering, gravel, and snow. I find it very enjoyable to drive Misaki Ito's Demio on GT5. The pictures I took is like Misaki Ito travelling around the world with her Demio.

Hello

Hello

Oreimo star in a reasonably priced Demio

The third-generation Mazda Demio (Mazda 2) facelift with the new SKYACTIV-G engine was here since June. There were commercials of it starring world soccer superstar Yuto Nagatomo. But here in Chiba, Japan, it was not enough to satisfy the craving of the new Demio SKYACTIV model. There was a print ad for Chiba Mazda dealerships that has the new, 30km/L, Mazda Demio SKYACTIV and (gasp) the main character of the controversial light novel and anime Ore no Imouto Ga Konna Ni Kawaii Wake Ga Nai (日本名:俺の妹がこんなに可愛いわけがない), Kirino Kousaka!

Kirino Kousaka in a Chiba Mazda print ad

People from Chiba, Japan are complaining how did that happened. An Oreimo star for a reasonably priced Demio? We can't help it. A star of a reasonably priced car is born. That print ad served the point. Would that work? Remember, the Demio SKYACTIV sell very well in Japan.

I think most from Chiba would say "I'm sorry Nagatomo-san, I want Kirino Kousaka to be on that ad!"

Mazda Demio SKYACTIV commercials starring Yuto Nagatomo!

When the third-generation Mazda Demio minor change with SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY went on sale since June 30, 2011, Mazda released official Japanese commercials starring Japanese soccer player, Yuto Nagatomo!

Nice ads! Speaking of which, as most of you saying what was that commercial song, the song is titled Hello by Naoto In Raimi. It will be released this mid-August 2011 from Universal Music.

Speaking of which, the minor change Mazda Demio (Mazda2) with 1.3L SKYACTIV-G engine reached up to 6000 orders since its pre-orders started in June 9, 2011.

Mazda 2 (Mazda Demio) - Forza 3 Owner's View

Blue as the SKYACTIV

The smile of the NAGARE face

FINAL IMPRESSIONS: Debuted in Japan since July 2007, exported worldwide including the U.S. and in the Philippines, and now listed as one of Forza Motorsport 3's world class cars via The World Class Car Pack since July 2010, it's great to know that the third-generation Mazda Demio (Mazda 2) is indeed a world-class compact car designed and engineered from Hiroshima/Hofu, Japan.
While not good in terms of performance, the Mazda Demio/2 in Forza Motorsport 3 is a great way to call it MIYO Mazda. MIYO MAZDA? That's Make It Your Own Mazda! Why MIYO MAZDA? Because like most Mazda models especially the Mazdaspeed Axela (BL3FW), the Mazda 2 can be decorated with any vinyls and stickers handmade by players. With such customization, the Mazda 2 is best to call it MIYO (Make It Your Own) Mazda. Now if only I can learn how to replicate the SKYACTIV i-STOP badge as seen on the recently facelifted Demio...

Third-generation Mazda Demio/2 Minor Change (DE3FS/DE3AS/DE5FS) and Demio 13-SKYACTIV (DEJFS)

2012 Mazda Demio

The third-generation Mazda Demio (Mazda 2), launched since July 2007, is now a world-proven compact car that is already proven to take on the world. Europe has one, America has one, Africans has one, Australians has one, Asians (especially in the Philippines) has one, the whole world has one because the Mazda Demio is a fuel efficient compact car that takes places. Last year, the Mazda Demio received minor changes worldwide except Japan where the pre-MC model takes place until late June 2011. This late June 2011, Japan will witness the big minor change on the third-generation Mazda Demio and now it is the first Mazda to be ever equipped with the new SKYACTIV Technology!

What is SKYACTIV Technology?
Part of Mazda's vision to create a perfect harmony between ecology of the hybrid car and the performance of the gasoline-powered car, the term SKYACTIV was born. The SKYACTIV technology provides driving pleasure and outstanding eco-friendly and safely performance to customers with the fuel efficient engines, efficient transmissions, and "lighter and rigid" platforms. To learn more about SKYACTIV, visit http://www.mazda.com/mazdaspirit/skyactiv/

MAZDA DEMIO 13-SKYACTIV (DBA-DEJFS)

Mazda P3-VPS engine

The new 2012 Mazda Demio is the first Mazda to be equipped with the all new P3-VPS (1.3-litre SKYACTIV-G) engine. The new SKYACTIV-G engine is the next generation of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine that is the first to attain the world's highest petrol engine compression ratio of 14.0:1, 15% increase of fuel efficiency and torque, and a 4-2-1 exhaust system, cavity pistons, multihole injectors and some of the technology that makes SKYACTIV "Only the sky is the limit" after all. The Mazda Demio 13-SKYACTIV provides 84ps/5400rpm of power, 11.4kg-m/4000rpm of torque, and the fuel economy of 30km/L (10-15 mode). With that, the new Mazda Demio SKYACTIV is the reigning "king" of fuel efficiency, dethroning the 27.0km/L cars like the fifth-generation Daihatsu Move and the third-generation Suzuki MR Wagon!

SKYACTIV i-STOP

Good to know that Mazda's i-stop feature found on the second-generation Axela/3 and the third-generation Mazda Premacy/5 is included at the Mazda Demio/2 13-SKYACTIV model. With i-stop equipped, it will automatically shut-off the P3-VPS (1.3L DOHC SKYACTIV-G) engine when stopped at the red light. Also included is the CVT for enhanced fuel efficiency, good for those who want to take a long Japanese trip this summer.

i-DM (Intelligent Drive Master)

2012 Mazda Demio i-DM (Intelligent Drive Master)

To determine how good you master the 2012 Mazda Demio 13-SKYACTIV, a new i-DM (Intelligent Drive Master) is added to the right of the tachometer. The i-DM determines the skill level, fuel economy, stats, and miscellaneous stuff while driving the Mazda Demio 13-SKYACTIV. It shows how good you used the SKYACTIV-powered Demio at various aspects.

Other Choices
Aside from the 13-SKYACTIV variant, the new Demio still offers non-SKYACTIV variants like the 13C 5MT, 13C EC-AT, 13C-V (with CVT), 13C with e-4WD, 15C 5MT, 15C EC-AT, and the Demio Sport that has a 1.5L DOHC engine and it comes with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT with a 7-speed manual mode. Available colors are Crystal White Pearl Mica, Sunlight Silver Metallic, Aluminum Metallic, Ice Blue Metallic, Spirited Green Metallic, True Red, Radiant Ebony Mica, Metropolitan Gray Mica, and Brilliant Black, with the addition of two new colors such as Burgundy Red Mica and Aquatic Blue Mica (13-SKYACTIV exclusive color).

My Comment:
The third-generation, world-proven, Mazda Demio is now gaining its new face and a new SKYACTIV-G engine that is truly meant to say "only the sky is the limit" once and for all. The next generation GDi engine provides exceptional fuel economy and performance, perfect for the long trip ahead. This is the ultimate in eco-car history.

Question is: When will the new SKYACTIV-G engine reach the Philippines? If Anika Salceda-Wycoco, Ford Group Philippines assistant vice president for communications, read this, she will reply with this; NOT YET AND WE ARE STILL UNDECIDED WHEN WE WILL BRING MAZDA'S SKYACTIV ENGINE TO THE PHILIPPINES. orz

One more thing in my opinion, I think the SKYACTIV engines are too dirty to handle the Philippines' own dirty fuel. I hope the government revise about clean gasoline and if that, there will be chance for Filipinos to witness SKYACTIV.
