Six months have passed since The Doctor thwarted world chaos by ending Sutekh's Empire of Death and reuniting Ruby Sunday with her real mother, but what is the "absolute terror" Mrs. Flood warned at the end? No one knows what that is but for now, The Doctor's having a vacation in the Christmas 2024 special where his stay at the Time Hotel and an encounter with a young woman turned deadly.
Doctor Who 2024 Christmas Special |
HOLD IT! Ensure you have already watched the episode before my quick review. Come back here when you have already watched it.
The story begins with The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) visiting The Time Hotel in 43rd-century London, dealing with a suspicious briefcase eating away those holding it, mentioning a warning: "The star seed will bloom and the flesh will rise". The briefcase disintegrated its previous holders, including Trev Simpkins, a man The Doctor entrusted to uncover this conspiracy, and it's now in the hands of a Silurian hotel manager.
As The Doctor stumbled into the present-day hotel room with Joy (Nicola Coughlan) in it, The Doctor and the Silurian's stand-off over the briefcase ended with Joy taking hold of the case. With Joy's life in jeopardy, The Doctor uncovers the truth behind the deadly briefcase and disarms it with the help of the other version of himself who later gets Joy and abandons him, telling him to complete the loop.
Spending a year alone in the present-day Sandringham Hotel with receptionist Anita keeping him company, the Doctor bids his receptionist friend farewell and ventures to Manhattan, waiting for the right time to return to The Time Hotel, leading to that moment.
As The Doctor tries to uncover the "star seed" puzzle, he becomes suspicious about Joy until Joy reveals the truth about her...sadness.
With that sorted, The Doctor uncovered the briefcase's secret; it was Vilengard, an intergalactic weapons company that nearly killed The Doctor. The Doctor almost got to the bottom of the secret but with the briefcase eaten by the dinosaur, the situation turned chaotic until The Doctor received a recorded message from Trev via The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver, warning them to take the star seed off-world before it blows.
Racing against time, The Doctor resorts to creative measures to retrieve the case but in the end, Joy takes the star seed from the briefcase and leaves. The star seed will bloom and the flesh will rise. Joy bids The Doctor farewell as she brings...Joy to the World.
It's great to see Nicola Coughlan, who is famous for starring in "The Marvelous Miss Maisel", guest star in the Christmas special, which feels like the movie "Carry-on" because of the deadly baggage. No shady villain doing suspicious phone calls is involved. Just The Doctor, Joy, and the deadly briefcase they're dealing with.
Those who watched both Doctor Who's Joy to the World episode and the movie Carry-on can't say which baggage is the deadliest; the briefcase with the handcuff carrying the "star seed" or the luggage with the red ribbon on the handle that carries a deadly bomb. Either way, they're both a thriller to watch.
The race against time in Doctor Who ultimately revealed the significance of "Joy to the World." It's truly mind-blowing, isn't it? A young woman from the present day becomes a pivotal figure in a moment that changes the course of history for all of humanity. It's the dream, the twinkle, and the beginning of the superstar, the Doctor Who way.
Mission Complete for The 15th Doctor's second Christmas special and with that, let's enjoy the BTS.
