HOLD IT! Ensure you have already watched the episode before my quick review. Come back here when you have already watched it.
The episode begins with The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) arriving in Glyngatwg, Wales when suddenly, The Doctor steps into a mysterious circle. When Ruby reads a mysterious letter saying "Rest in Peace, Mad Jack", The Doctor is nowhere to be found. The only clue is a mysterious woman appearing 73 yards near Ruby.
Ruby tried asking a nearby hiker to the mysterious woman where The Doctor was but the hiker suddenly ran away after talking to the mysterious woman. As darkness fell, Ruby stayed for a night at a nearby inn called Y Pren Marlu.
As one of the patrons runs away after meeting with the mysterious woman, everyone at the inn is growing suspicious regarding the untold phenomena surrounding Ruby. When Ruby said "Rest in Peace, Mad Jack", everyone in the inn knew Ruby conjured the Mad Jack spell that caused The Doctor to disappear.
As the door knocks, everyone believes Mad Jack is near. Sadly, it's just a prank to tick Ruby off. Although pranked by everybody at the inn, the mystery woman is still within Ruby's proxy.
Having been kicked out by the innkeeper and chosen to abandon the now-abandoned TARDIS, Ruby went home to where her foster parents Carla and Cherry live. Meanwhile, Ruby asked her foster mother to question the mysterious woman but sadly, her foster mother ran away.
Perplexed over the mysterious woman who caused everyone to run away upon questioning, UNIT Commander Kate Lethbridge-Stewart appeared to help Ruby with the situation. As expected, all UNIT forces, especially Kate, retreated after questioning the mysterious woman.
With the mysterious woman causing so much misery for her, Ruby had no choice but to live with it for the rest of her life.
22 years have passed since the mystery woman forever in Ruby's proxy. By coincidence, Ruby encountered a name that rang a bell; the Mad Jack known as Roger ap Gwilliam, the prime minister who led the UK to a nuclear war. It's up to Ruby to stop Roger ap Gwilliam from becoming prime minister. That meant Ruby's using her secret weapon against him.
Spying as a volunteer for Roger ap Gwilliam's election campaign, Ruby uncovers Roger's sinister plot that could jeopardize world order. As Roger is elected prime minister, all is not lost for Ruby as she's unleashing her Plan B against him.
At the Cardiff stadium, where Roger prepares his victory speech, Ruby is putting the mysterious woman to great use by positioning 73 yards between Ruby and Roger. With the mystery woman scaring Roger ap Gwilliam away, Ruby successfully averted world chaos.
40 years later, as Ruby spends the last moments of her life, the mystery woman surrounding Ruby is unmasked. The mystery woman is none other than Ruby Sunday herself. It's her future self.
Back at the beginning of the story, just as The Doctor's going to step on the magic circle, Ruby manages to stop him from stepping on it, ending this episode.
This episode of Doctor Who is the story of Ruby Sunday's life. It begins with the Doctor's sudden disappearance and the appearance of the semperdistans lady. Ruby then goes on to scare the most dangerous prime minister in history.
No Doctor Who story that featured a badass companion revolting against a rogue prime minister since Martha Jones stood up against Prime Minister Harold Saxon (The Master) back in 2007.
Whoa, an over-6-decade time leap since The Doctor's disappearance and the mystery woman appeared on Ruby's proxy. She has spent her eternity with the mysterious woman who scared everyone, even UNIT forces, and then puts it to good use against a politician going rogue. If only we wished we had that mystery someone stuck in our lives just like her and used it to save the world.
This episode made a special screening at the 2024 MCM London Comic-Con and looks like the crowd went nuts about the recent Doctor Who episode that featured nothing but Ruby Sunday and the mysterious lady standing 73 yards in front of her. Even Jemma Redgrave, who played Kate Lethbridge-Stewart in the show, was impressed by this episode.
Semperdistans. It means so much more than being distanced.
