So it begins. The Ncuti Gatwa era of BBC's megahit TV series, Doctor Who, the first of the bi-generation era, kicked off with a two-episode worldwide premiere. It's an honor to have Russell T Davies returned as the showrunner of this show as Gatwa's time as The 15th Doctor has officially begun.
Doctor Who Season 1 Episode 2 |
HOLD IT! Ensure you have already watched the episode before my quick review. Come back here when you have already watched it.
The first episode of Ncuti Gatwa's first Doctor Who season is titled "Space Babies". Picking up after last year's Christmas Special, The Church on Ruby Road, The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) began their time-traveling escapades which led them to a space station inhabited by infants, a nanny, and a terrifying monster known as The Bogeyman.
Following the revelations regarding the space station and with one of the babies confronting the Bogeyman, the duo races against time to rescue the baby and fend off The Bogeyman, with a little help from the nanny named Jocelyn and the other space babies.
Having learned that The Bogeyman is made by the babies' boogers, and with the Sonic Screwdriver The Doctor left is fixing the ship's communication system, the duo, with Jocelyn's help, lured The Bogeyman to the trap, but because of The Doctor's conscience and the voices of the babies pleading to stop hurting the Bogeyman, he had no choice but to save the monster.
With everyone on the ship, including the monster, saved and after The Doctor found a way to move the space station with a little methane gas, the duo returned to the TARDIS and off to the next adventure.
The next adventure, titled "The Devil's Chord" saw The Doctor and Ruby arrive in 1963 London to meet The Beatles while being hunted by a sinister foe named Maestro (Jinkx Monsoon).
After their little chance encounter with the young Paul McCartney and John Lennon, The Doctor and Ruby discover something wrong in this backdrop. With a mysterious piano on the rooftop, Ruby played an ominous tune...that summoned Maestro and the duo are on the run from what's known to be one of The Toymaker's legions.
Having escaped from Maestro, The Doctor and Ruby returned to the TARDIS to travel back to the present, only to find that the world was destroyed by a nuclear armageddon. It was the handiwork of Maestro herself because, without music, the world is in complete discord.
To stop Maestro, the duo returned to 1963 London to find the tune but Maestro's a step ahead of them. She captured Ruby, forcing The Doctor to confront Maestro by all means. With Ruby freed from Maestro's grip thanks to a song connected to her past, The Doctor and Maestro are locked in a music battle. The duo wins the fight against Maestro but it is short-lived because the Doctor almost had it playing with the tune that would banish Maestro and failed by one note, causing Maestro to trap Ruby and The Doctor in musical instruments. With unexpected help from the young John and Paul, Maestro is vanquished...for now. With the enemy out of the picture, The Doctor celebrates their win...with a musical number.
The season premiere of Doctor Who was a two-episode event that proves the show is back in business. The 15th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, and his companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, are off on their intergalactic joyride. I enjoyed the first two episodes, and now it's time to discuss the interesting parts.
The first one, Space Babies, reminded us of the Rugrats episode where the babies are in a spaceship, but because this is Doctor Who, the cute things are mixed in with darker undertones, not to mention the language filter jab. The second one, The Devil's Chord, is more than just revisiting the rise of The Beatles. It's also a sign of what to expect during The 15th Doctor's maiden season. To put it in a broad context, they've only just begun to face the evils lurking between them. Maestro is one of the evils The Doctor faced this season and we can expect more as the season progresses as well as Ruby Sunday's secret origins.
The heat is on for The Doctor and Ruby Sunday. All of the time and space are on their tail. Welcome back.
