Since the end of The Power of The Doctor last year, The 13th Doctor regenerated back into The 10th Doctor. Why did The Doctor gain an old face from a long time ago? Was it because of his loose ends regarding Donna Noble?
The beginning of the 60th-anniversary special trilogy sees The 14th Doctor reunite with Donna Noble as they're dealing with a terrifying threat on a larger scale.

HOLD IT! Ensure that you have already watched the episode before coming back here for my quick review. Come back here when you have already watched it.
It was a lively evening in the city when The 14th Doctor (David Tennant) stepped out of his TARDIS while Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and her family had their hands full when suddenly, a mysterious spaceship crashed somewhere, prompting UNIT forces to investigate the crash site, only to lead them to a terrifying trap that alters the UNIT forces' minds.
Meanwhile, Donna's daughter, Rose (Yasmin Finney), encounters a mysterious creature called the Meep (voiced by Miriam Margoyles) as it's seeking refuge from the Wrath Warriors who want it dead. When Donna discovered the creature her daughter hid in her shed, panic ensued while the UNIT forces and the Wrath Warriors unleashed an all-out conflict, and with The Doctor arrived at her home, it got worse.
Caught in a crossfire, The Doctor, Donna, her family, and the Meep are making a daring escape. As they escaped, The Doctor knew that something was fishy going on around here.
The Wrath Warriors that attacked them turned out to be the good guys and the Meep that Rose rescued is plotting to destroy Earth using the spaceship that crashed earlier. The mysterious force that brainwashed UNIT soldiers was revealed to be solar psychedelia, the same force that brainwashed the Meepkind.
As the Meep prepares to unleash armageddon, The Doctor and Donna are racing against time to avert global destruction thanks to a little help from a UNIT agent Shirley Bingham (Ruth Madeley). The two tried stopping Meep's spaceship from destroying the planet...but they were too late.
Desperate, The Doctor has no choice but to make Donna remember his existence even if it kills her. The DoctorDonna is back to life and the two successfully averted world destruction...at the cost of Donna's life, or is she? As brainwashed UNIT forces surrounded them, someone was flicking the switches, bringing the soldiers back to their consciousness. It was Rose Noble who saved the day thanks to a shocking discovery that the metacrisis Donna had passed down to her child. A shared inheritance that saved Donna's life.
Moments after saving the world, and with the mother and daughter letting go of the metacrisis from their heads, The Doctor and Donna are off for a new adventure in a newly revamped TARDIS, but due to Donna's klutziness, the TARDIS is facing malfunction again, ending the first chapter of the trilogy.
The beginning of the 60th Anniversary trilogy truly is the "Welcome Back" banner for Tennant and Tate, the GOATS in the Modern Who era. Not only that, it showcased the new look of The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver and the TARDIS. Also, we get to see the new Doctor Who opening sequence as well.
Beginning with The 14th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver, it's got new features such as cutting through fences, accessing the database, generating barriers, and resonating mortars. We can expect more surprises in store for the Sonic Screwdriver's mega update. Also, the TARDIS gets a new look and the new interior looks like the original since the beginning of Doctor Who six decades ago but it now comes with new switches and ambient lighting. It even spawned a coffee machine. Too bad, Donna spilled it, causing the new TARDIS to go haywire.
Digging through the first part of the 60th-anniversary special, when The Doctor said "I'm so sorry for your loss", this episode made a small remembrance for the late Bernard Cribbins, who played Donna's grandfather, Wilfred Mott, who helped The Doctor in the two-part special, The End of Time, which is, of course, David Tennant's final adventure.
The "binary" dialogue blurted out is a reference to what Donna said at the end of the Season 4 finale, Journey's End, the one where The Doctor sealed Donna's memories of their adventures. Now that the past has come back to them, it looks like their loose ends have been sorted...for now. At least we finally learned the most important bit not because he and Donna are binary but because The Doctor is male, female, neither, and more.
What a way to kick off the 60th-anniversary specials with the return of the DoctorDonna tandem, the Meep, the new Sonic Screwdriver, the new TARDIS, and a rather cryptic warning. We can expect more to come with the DoctorDonna in the second part of the special next week.
