- Jair Bolsonaro has confounded expectations to force a runoff vote in Brazil's presidential election against former socialist leader Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. Lula won 48% of the votes in the first round vs. 43% for Bolsonaro. The second round of the elections will begin at the end of October.

- Iranian authorities trapped a number of students at a top university as violent protests in Tehran continue.

- The United Nations is calling on Ukraine to release thousands of disabled people living in orphanages.

- Indonesian officials say that 17 children were part of those killed in a crush at a football match in Malang in East Java. At least 125 people died in one of the worst stadium disasters. Fans in the overcrowded stadium rushed to the exit when police fired tear gas following a pitch immersion.

- The European Union's foreign policy chief has promised a firm response to the expulsion of the bloc's ambassador by Nicaragua and criticized Nicaragua's decision to end diplomatic ties with The Netherlands.

- King Charles III and his wife are due to attend a public engagement in Britain for the first time since the period of royal mourning of Queen Elizabeth II came to an end.

- Episode 11 of the Lycoris Recoil TV anime got its eyecatch visual swapped to stop viewers from recreating it. The visual features poisonous spider lilies that the TV show's characters putting it on their mouth.

- The Pretty Series will end its 11-and-a-half broadcast run on TV with the series finale of Waccha PriMagi airing this Sunday.

- Comedy Central announced that The Daily Show will continue even without Trevor Noah despite rumors that it could move to Paramount+ streaming service after the said comedian left the show.
