THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: S.Korea, Mekong countries pledge close ties
The leaders of South Korea and five Mekong nations have pledged to work closer together at their first-ever summit.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in met the heads of Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos on Wednesday after the two-day summit with ASEAN members in Busan, South Korea.
President Moon said he agreed with the leaders to develop Information and Communications Technology-based projects in the areas of education, new growth industries and forest preservation.
Seoul will also increase its official development assistance to the five countries.
Moon said, "South Korea will stand with the Mekong region in the belief that the development of Mekong is the development of South Korea."
South Korea's reaching out to the Mekong countries comes as its economy is slowing, partly due to the trade dispute between the United States and China. Seoul also has unresolved issues with North Korea and with Japan.
