THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Pres. Moon fully committed to building peace on Korean Peninsula to open era of co-prosperity

President Moon Jae-in has reaffirmed his commitment to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula,... saying the country's future lies in a new order of peace and prosperity.

He said this during a regular meeting with his top aides today,... amid positive developments signaling the resumption of denuclearization talks with North Korea.

He added that he will work to gather support from the international community when he attends the UN General Assembly next week.
And through his bilateral summit with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines,... President Moon will fully support dialogue between North Korea and the U.S. and discuss ways to strengthen Seoul's ties with Washington.

He also addressed issues related to the domestic economy.
He said the government will accelerate efforts to strengthen the Korean economy against Japan's economic retaliation.

South Korea and the U.S. are preparing to begin negotiations on their defense cost-sharing pact,... amid pressure from President Donald Trump to increase contributions from allies.

They are gearing up to begin talks over the Special Measures Agreement as early as late September,... as the current one-year deal is set to expire on December 31st.

While representatives from the foreign ministry or defense ministry usually take part in the negotiations on Seoul's side,... this time personnel from the finance ministry could lead the negotiations.

Such a move is seen to take into account the increased burden on the country's budget as under this year's agreement,... South Korea agreed to pay over 860 million U.S. dollars,... an increase of 8-point-2 percent from the previous year.

Even before launching the negotiations,... President Trump is saying that allies need to pay more for costs related to the presence of U.S. soldiers.

Washington reportedly asked Seoul to significantly increase its share of the total costs,... which are around 5 billion dollars per year.

South Korea is considering boosting its defense capabilities by spending 34 million U.S. dollars next year to develop of unmanned surface vehicles for its navy and mobile surveillance equipment.

Multiple South Korean military sources confirmed that South Korean defense and aerospace company L-I-G Nex-1 would be undertaking the development of the unmanned vessel... called the "Haegeom".

The South Korean navy has been running a pilot project of the USV since 2017... following an MOU with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.
