Let's Do The News! (August 5, 2019)



- A general strike, followed by another weekend of violent protests in Hong Kong, paralyzed transport and causing more than 200 flight cancellations. Embattled Beijing-backed leader Carrie Lam addresed the media, warning that the protests are a challenge to China's sovereignty and pushing it to the verge of an "extremely dangerous situation."

- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte says that he prays for Nur Misuari's enlightenment, sworn to act "promptly and severely" against corruption, consider firing 100 more BOC personnel, and revealed that small town lotteries and peryahan ng bayan operators cheat government of rightful share.

- Peter Joemel Advincula, alias "Bikoy" filed before the Department of Justice his application to be placed under the Witness Protection Program.

- Several prominent leaders and leaders of the Filipino-American community in the United States called the Trump administration to reverse last weekend's decision to end the family-based reunification program for Filipino World War II veterans, calling the move "cruel and inhumane." They issued the call following last weekend's announcement that the USCIS will terminate the said parole program as well as the Haitian Family Reunification which were design to promote family reunification.

- US President Donald Trump denounced last weekend's mass shootings in Ohio and Texas, saying "hate has no place in our country." The shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, over the weekend left 29 people dead.

- Russian leader Vladimir Putin warned that Russia will be forced to build new nuclear weapons if the United States started doing so after the demise of the landmark nuclear arms control treaty. Last weekend. the US formally left the Intermediate Nuclear Forces treaty with Russia after determining that Moscow was violating the treaty, an accusation that the Kremlin denied.

- The New Zealand government released long-awaited plans to overhaul its abortion laws to give women right to choose.
