THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Kim Jong-un thanked Pres. Moon for arranging DMZ meeting
When the leaders of South and North Korea and the U.S. met this past weekend, Kim Jong-un apparently thanked President Moon for helping arrange it.
A high-ranking official at the Blue House told reporters earlier today that shortly after crossing the military demarcation line into the South, Kim expressed gratitude to Moon as they held hands, though the official couldn't reveal exactly what Kim said out of diplomatic courtesy.
Before President Trump crossed over into North Korea, the official said, he asked Moon whether he could do so, to which Moon said
it would be fine if he would like to shake hands with Kim and then cross while holding hands.
The U.S. is willing to discuss humanitarian relief and improvements for diplomatic ties with North Korea during their negotiations.
A U.S.-based news website cited sources to report Tuesday that Washington's special representative for North Korea told reporters as such in an off the record briefing on their way back to Washington from South Korea on Sunday.
Biegun said the U.S. is not ready to lift the sanctions against the regime even if it freezes its weapons program but the U.S. could give Kim other concessions, such as humanitarian relief and improved diplomatic ties.
While he did not go into the details of what that could be,...
joint-liaison office is thought to be a possible option, as it's known to be one of the items the two sides were opened to at the
Hanoi summit in February.
President Moon Jae-in has asked South Korea's Christian community to play an active role in establishing peace on the Peninsula,... and in restoring social unity between South and North.
President Moon hosted a luncheon Wednesday at the Blue House for a dozen leaders of major Christian groups... to get their advice on state affairs.
He noted that Christians are already providing humanitarian aid to the North and engaging in religious exchanges,... and he asked that they continue helping with efforts for peace.
He also called on them to help integrate the two societies.
Although it's something that should be achieved through politics,
he said,... it would help if religion can make up for what politics cannot accomplish.
The president plans to organize another meeting with the Buddhist community later this month.
South Korea's foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha says Seoul's goal is achieving the complete denuclearization of North Korea.
Speaking at a parliamentary meeting earlier today,... Kang said Seoul and Washington reaffirmed that their goal is denuclearization during their recent summit,... adding that she doesn't believe there's a change in Washington's strategy.
There had been speculation that the U.S. may settle for a nuclear freeze,... after a report said that U.S. officials may scrap their goal of getting Pyeongyang to completely abandon its nuclear program.
As for the recent meeting between Kim Jong-un and President Trump at the DMZ,... Kang said she received a detailed briefing from the U.S.,... and that Washington sees the meeting as positive.
