THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: President Moon nominates Yoon Seok-yeol as S. Korea's next Prosecutor-General
President Moon Jae-in has nominated Yoon Seok-yeol to lead South Korea's prosecution.
Yoon has been the chief of Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office-- the nation's biggest prosecution branch -- since 2017.
He played a key role in the investigation into the massive corruption scandal involving former President Park Geun-hye and her longtime confidante Choi Soon-sil.
Officials say President Moon's nomination of Yoon indicates his strong will to reform the prosecution.
If Yoon is confirmed by the National Assembly, he will replace Moon Moo-il as his two-year term ends next month.
Throughout his three-nation tour to Northern Europe last week, President Moon Jae-in expressed optimism toward resuming talks between South and North Korea, as well as between North Korea and the U.S.
He said efforts to revive dialogue with the North are ongoing, raising hopes of some kind of a breakthrough.
President Moon repeatedly said that another inter-Korean summit needs to take place within this month. He also called on Pyeongyang and Washington to meet for lower-level talks to move forward in their nuclear negotiations.
But despite the repeated messages, the North is yet to respond.
Attention is on U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun's rare, week-long stay in Seoul next week.
There is a possibility that during his stay, the two sides could sit down for working-level negotiations at Panmunjeom, which could help denuclearization talks gain momentum.
The top diplomats of South Korea and Russia will meet in Moscow in the coming hours to discuss various bilateral and regional issues.
After accompanying President Moon Jae-in on his trip to Northern Europe, Seoul's Foreign Affairs Minister Kang Kyung-wha landed in the Russian capital on Sunday.
Officials say Kang and her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov will delve into ways to further develop Seoul-Moscow ties as they look forward to next year's 30th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations.
And with Russia having promised to cooperate on economic and cultural fronts with North Korea, issues related to that could also top their agenda.
