- Education Secretary Leonor Briones welcomed over over 27 million learners in both public and private schools, and assured them that the Department of Education (DepEd) will continue to increase its efforts to deliver quality, accessible, relevant, and liberating basic education. In her welcome message for school opening this SY 2019-2020, Briones reminded learners who trooped to their respective schools to “bear in mind that it took the whole community—parents, teachers, local government units, national government agencies, non-government organizations, partners from the public and private sectors, and other stakeholders—to prepare you on this journey.”
- Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana stressed that no single military superpower should have unilateral control over the South China Sea. In a speech during the 18th Asia Security Summit in Singapore, Lorenzana explained that since the South China is one of the vital arteries of global trade, freedom of navigation in the area is very important.
- The Presidential Commission on Good Government remains on standby for the formal order of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to auction the jewelry collection of former First Lady Imelda Marcos worth P704.8 billion.
- The Pentagon tells the White House that military "will not be politicized" in the wake of the USS John McCain fiasco.
- US President Donald Trump will visit the United Kingdom to bring Brexit advice on the troubled nation. Queen Elizabeth II will welcome Trump and his wife Melania to Buckingham Palace, where they will be treated to a guard of honour, a private lunch and later, a glittering state banquet.
- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo worries that the Trump administration’s soon-to-be-released Middle East peace plan will be considered “unworkable,” and might not gain traction, according to reports.
- Parties in German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government are set to hold separate crisis talks, after her fragile coalition suffered a fresh body blow as the leader of junior partner SPD quit.
- Chinese warships popped up into Sydney Harbour, forcing the prime minister to reassure its residents. “It may have been a surprise to others, but it certainly wasn’t a surprise to the government,” said Prime Minister Scott Morrison, trying to dampen concerns.
