- A total of 51 newly-promoted Generals and Flag Officers led by Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Benjamin R. Madrigal Jr., took their oath before President Rodrigo Duterte at the Rizal Hall, MalacaƱang Palace in Manila.

- President Duterte is in Tokyo, Japan, for a four-day visit. This came after US President Donald Trump left Japan.

- Former president and House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is “eagerly awaiting” the Senate’s final approval of a new ‘sin’ tax reform law before Congress’ sine die adjournment next week.

- German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s favored successor Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer sparked outrage on social media with an apparent call for limits to free speech around elections. Addressing the issue on Monday night, Kramp-Karrenbauer said if 70 newspaper editors had called to boycott parties ahead of an election, that would be classed “clearly as propaganda”.

- Hundreds of tonnes of imported plastic waste will be shipped back to where it came from, Malaysia said, insisting the country did not want to be a global dumping ground.

- The United States walked out of the UN’s Conference on Disarmament as Venezuela assumed the body’s rotating presidency, with Washington’s envoy insisting he would not endure sessions led by “a rogue state.”

- Sydney imposes its first major water restrictions in a decade, putting limits on homes and businesses amid a record-breaking drought.

Taiwan displayed how its fighter jets can land, refuel and rearm on the island’s highways as part of its largest annual exercise simulating defense against a Chinese invasion. The self-ruled island has long lived under the threat of invasion by Beijing which views Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to take it back by force if necessary.

- The owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers team is "awake, responsive and resting comfortably" after suffering a stroke Sunday, according to a Jay Farner, the CEO of Quicken Loans, the company Gilbert founded and chairs.

- Thirdy Ravena of Ateneo is named Basketball Player of the Year.
