- The Judicial and Bar Council announced that eight candidates are vying for the lone seat of Deputy Ombudsman. The JBC said the candidates who applied for the post were Eusebio Avila, Erickson Balmes, Eduardo Bringas, Jacinto Dela Cruz Jr., Rodolfo Noel Quimbo, Beda Epres, Rafael Hipolito, and Cornelio Somido.
- Venezuela braced for another day of nationwide protests after President Nicolas Maduro clamped down further on opposition leader Juan Guaido, locking up his deputy in a military prison following a dramatic arrest.
- The Trump administration ordered a tariff hike on almost all remaining imports from China, putting at risk on global growth and financial stability. “The President… ordered us to begin the process of raising tariffs on essentially all remaining imports from China, which are valued at approximately $300 billion,” US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement. The developments came as two days of talks to resolve the trade battle ended Friday with no deal, but no breakdown either, offering a glimmer of hope that Washington and Beijing could find a way to avert damage to the global economy.
- The Pentagon was diverting another $1.5 billion for new barriers to stop illegal immigrants on the US-Mexico border, following the authorization of $1 billion in March. Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has agreed to take charge of the replacement of 78 miles (125 kilometers) of fencing on the southern frontier in Arizona and Texas, the defense department said in a statement.
