- The Department of Agrarian Reform turned over yesterday six hauling trucks and common service facilities to agrarian reform beneficiaries organizations vin the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. The equipment, which had a total cost of P4.7 million, included six hauling trucks, 35 HP tractors with implements, hand tractors, corn shellers, rice threshers, coffee hullers, and coffee roasters.
- Government prosecutors have approved the filing of a direct assault charge against a Chinese woman who splashed taho at a policeman over the weekend. In an inquest-resolution issued by the Office of the City Prosecutor of Mandaluyong City and a copy of which was furnished to the Department of Justice, government prosecutors recommended that Chinese national Jiale Zhang, 23, be indicted with direct assault of an agent in authority under Article 148 of the Revised Penal Code.
- The Supreme Court failed to rule this morning on four petitions that challenged the constitutionality of the extension of martial law in Mindanao until Dec. 31, 2019.
- Japan had lodged a complaint with Seoul and demanded an apology after a South Korean lawmaker said the Japanese emperor should apologize over the issue of “comfort women” who were used in military brothels. South Korea’s National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang said in an interview with Bloomberg last week Japanese Emperor Akihito, “as the son of the main culprit of war crimes”, should apologize to women forced to work in Japan’s military brothels before he steps down at the end of April.
- US lawmakers have reached an agreement in principle to avoid a new government shutdown at the end of the week, including $1.375 billion for a wall on the southern US border. The agreement still faces White House approval.
- The United Kingdom has signed a trade continuity agreement with Switzerland to avoid disruptions for thousands of businesses post-Brexit as the March 29 deadline draws near for Britain to leave the European Union. The Department for International Trade said the agreement would maintain UK-Swiss trade under the preferential terms currently available to both countries through an EU free trade deal.
- Soviet authorities themselves condemned the USSR’s bloody occupation of Afghanistan, but 30 years later some in Vladimir Putin’s Russia are coming to see the operation in a more positive light.
