The 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series kicked off with the 61st outing of what is known to be The Great American Race, the Daytona 500. This season marks the debut of the new Mustang-bodied stock cars which replaced last season's Fusion stock cars, and while expecting some fresh new competitions aside, the opening salvo of the season got induced with chaos from start to finish.
Summing up the chaos-induced Daytona 500, Lap 50 sees five cars involved in wreck, then Kyle Larson wins Stage 1. Stage 2 goes to Ryan Blaney, then there's carnage down pit road. Later, Kyle Larson makes contact with the outside wall and slides back down. With 18 laps to go, here comes The Big One as 18 drivers got caught in a massive pile-up crash, triggering a red flag.
Just as we thought that the race is reaching the climax, overtime got triggered with Clint Bowyer, Chase Elliott, William Byron, and others triggered another pile-up crash, triggering a red flag and an overtime.
After the two-lap overtime, Denny Hamlin nicked the checkered flag and won his second Daytona 500 race in his career. His victory serves as a tribute to the late J.D. Gibbs the recently deceased son of Joe Gibbs and co-founder of Joe Gibbs Racing, where he served as President.
Although chaos is a way to start the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, the Toyota driver's got the upper hand and looks like we can expect more in the course of this season.
Next race is at the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 this Sunday, February 24th.
