THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Foreign Minister Kang met Pompeo on denuclearization efforts
South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha has met with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss their joint efforts to denuclearize North Korea.
According to Seoul's foreign ministry, Kang and Pompeo met in Washington on Thursday, after attending former U.S. President George H.W. Bush's funeral.
The diplomats reaffirmed their close cooperation toward the final, fully verified denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
The two sides also promised to continue their work toward reaching a satisfactory agreement on defense cost sharing.
North Korea's foreign minister Ri Yong-ho arrived in Beijing on Thursday upon his Chinese counterpart's invitation.
Ri is expected to have met with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi on Friday morning, and discussed Pyeongyang-Beijing ties, the North's denuclearization efforts and Chinese President Xi Jinping's summit with the U.S. President on the sidelines of the G20 summit last week.
The planned second North Korea-U.S. summit is going to be one more chance for North Korea to live up to its commitments to denuclearize.
This is according to White House National Security Advisor John Bolton who said in an interview with U.S.-based radio network NPR on Thursday. that he thinks U.S. President Donald Trump is trying to give North Korea a chance to keep its promise made in Singapore.
He said. he will not prejudge what the president may do, when asked whether that summit is going to be the LAST chance the North Koreans would get.
But Bolton noted the abruptly canceled high-level talks between Pyeongyang and Washington last month, saying that they do not yet have Kim Jong-un in the room. and that the U.S. needs to see that happen.
