- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte wants the city of Daraga, Albay under COMELEC control following the murder of AKO BICOL Partylist representative Rodel Batocabe who is running for mayor int he said town.

- Labor Secretary and Government Peace Panel chair Silvestre Bello III came to the defense of President Duterte from criticisms when the latter ordered government forces to destroy elements of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front.

- The Ateneo De Manila University - Junior High School announced adjustments in resumption of classes next year following the bullying incidents involving students in its campus. AJHS principal Jose Antonio Salvador, in a memorandum addressed to the parents of the AJHS students, said the AJHS “has decided to move the start of classes” from January 3 to January 7, 2019 to “allow the school administration, faculty, and staff ample time to prepare for the implementation of a series of concrete and proactive measures that will directly address bullying on campus.”

- The Court of Tax Appeals has turned down the 219 million excise tax refund petition of Petron for importing alkylate used in the manufacture of unleaded gasoline. The oil company argued that the importation should be tax-exempt as it was just a raw material and not for domestic sale.

- US President Donald Trump declared during his visit to US troops stationed in Iraq that "the United States cannot continue to be the policeman of the world." Trump also defended his controversial decision to pull of US troops out of Syria, saying there would be no delays.

- An Israeli security official on Wednesday confirmed responsibility for overnight airstrikes in Syria, saying the air force had hit a series of targets involved in Iranian arms transfers to the Hezbollah militant group.

- The United States will take “extraordinary” protective measures to deal with a surge of immigrant children in custody, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Wednesday after a second Guatemalan child died in custody.

Colin O’Brady, of Portland, Oregon, became the first person to traverse Antarctica alone without any assistance, trekking across the polar continent in an epic 54-day journey that was previously deemed impossible.

- The Supreme Court sentenced nine Venezuelan military personnel to eight years in prison over their plot to oust President Nicolas Maduro four years ago. General Oswaldo Hernandez and retired Colonel Jose Delgado were among those sentenced to a minimum of five years, the court said in a statement.

- A so-called "super blood moon" will happen in the evening of January 20 to 21 and will be visible across North America. A total lunar eclipse will take place on Sunday the 20th at 11:41 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, and totality continues for more than an hour until 12:43 a.m. on Monday the 21st.
