It's the dawn of a new generation of FIA Formula E racing as the fifth season signals the beginning of the all-new GEN2 machines that are sleeker, more quicker, and more stylish than the old GEN1 cars. Apart from the new machines, the rules have changed so that all the races are now endurance-based and drivers need to rely on attack modes to trump opponents and charge for first place. Sounds complicating but it makes the new era more exciting.
The new season begins in a brand new location and it's located at Ad Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. The start of a new ePrix in the Middle East in the start of the new season? Now that's a plus and the opener's never been more exciting than ever. With new and returning teams assembled on the grid, who will be this season's victor?
In the season opener, Antonio Felix Da Costa, representing the brand new BMW i Andretti Motorsport, is the first to win the inaugural Ad Diriyah ePrix while last season's winner, Jean-Eric Vergne, representing DS TECHEETAH Formula E Team, placed 2nd, and Mahindra's Jerome D'Ambrosio placed 3rd, completing the first podium of the new season. Man, that 1:17.728 pole position Da Costa set in the qualifiers really paid off despite rainy conditions unheard in Saudi.
Next race is at Marrakesh, Morocco on the 12th of January, 2019.
