THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: U.S. Special Representative for North Korea in Seoul
Having arrived in Seoul on Sunday, U.S. Special Representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, has just started his official schedule in Seoul, first by visiting South Korea's foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha.
After the meeting with Kang, Biegun will sit down with his counterpart, Seoul's special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, Lee Do-hoon.
They are expected to discuss the latest developments in the denuclearization talks and their strategy on Washington's negotiations with the North after the U.S. midterms in early November.
They are also likely to analyze Pyeongyang's latest moves, such as its vice foreign minister's visit to Russia.
Before departing on Tuesday, Biegun is expected to meet with the Blue House officials.
Meanwhile, the Pyeongyang Joint Declaration signed last month by the leaders of the two Koreas takes legal effect today, laying the groundwork for Seoul to facilitate a series of inter-Korean cooperation projects.
The declaration, which includes a string of agreements from economic cooperation to easing of military tensions, has been published in an official gazette, and took effect from the moment of its publication.
