- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte abolished the Marcos-era Philippine Sugar Corporation due to its overlapping functions with other entities. In Memorandum Order No. 30, the President also authorized the liquidation of assets of PHILSUCOR to settle outstanding liabilities as well as compensation for the affected personnel.

- Operations of the Bureau of Customs remain normal amid putting personnel on "floating status." President Duterte on Sunday expressed his intention to put customs personnel, including customs police and intelligence units on “floating status” and will be replaced by military men. A few days ago, the president also put all customs executives on floating status. However, on Monday outgoing Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña said that operations in the bureau remain on a normal status, pending memorandum from Malacañang that will formalize the military takeover.

- A police colonel and four other lawmen who were named in President Duterte’s drug matrix were placed under police custody to make them available for the investigation on the extent of their involvement in illegal drugs smuggling.

- A Lion Air passenger flight from Jakarta, Indonesia, to Pangkal Pinang off the island of Sumatra, had crashed into the sea. There are 189 people onboard the plane that lost contact at 0633 hours, 13 minutes after taking off.

- Thousands of people from all faiths united behind calls that love defeat hate Sunday as Pittsburgh mourned the worst anti-Semitic attack in recent US history and the city’s “darkest hour.”

- The first Franco-Chinese satellite was launched into orbit on Monday to study ocean surface winds and waves around the clock, better predict cyclones and improve scientists’ understanding of climate change.

- Japanese Princess Ayako married a commoner in a ritual-filled ceremony at Tokyo's Meiji Shrine. Ayako and groom Kei Moriya were shown on national news walking slowly before guests at the shrine. The wedding took place in one of the pagoda-like buildings in the shrine complex and included an exchange of rings and a sharing of a cup of sake, according to Japanese media.

- The Volkswagen Tiguan receives a new Offroad variant, featuring unique exterior treatments, black chrome trims, roof rails, and mirror caps, among many others.



- The second season of Kemono Friends will premiere on TV Tokyo this early January.
