THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: 61-year-old quarantined over MERS



A 61-year-old man was quarantied over the weekend after testing positive for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome which killed almost 40 people in the country three years ago.

The patient, who is now in an isolated section of Seoul National University Hospital, arrived in South Korea last Friday on a flight from the UAE after staying in Kuwait for around three weeks.

The South Korean government has assigned officials to monitor the 439 people that were on the same flight as the patient and check for any symptoms.

Meanwhile, two other South Korean citizens took a medical examination in Kuwait, and one of them showed symptoms of MERS and is now under quarantine at a local hospital.

The government said that Korean residents in Kuwait who have been in physical contact with the patient will be investigated in cooperation with the government of Kuwait.

Moving on, South Korean president Moon Jae-in is meeting with visiting Indonesian President Joko Widowo at the Blue House today.

The leaders re expected to discuss joint efforts in promoting regional cooperation, including President Moon's New Southern Policy drive aimed at improving Korea's diplomatic and economic ties with Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia.

In the meantime, Washington's Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun is to arrive in South Korea on Monday afternoon for his diplomatic trip. His three day trip will begin with a welcome dinner with his South Korean counterpart Lee Do-hoon.

During his stay, Biegun is also scheduled to visit South Korea's top office of Cheongwadae, the Blue House, as well as the unification ministry, before traveling to Beijing and Tokyo.

Meanwhile, the head of South Korea's intelligence agency Suh Hoon met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Monday morning, to brief him on the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula.

Seoul and Tokyo should be strengthened to help the ongoing denuclerization efforts. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Suh said, Abe also wanted to hold summit talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
