- The Philippine government has offered prayers to the people of Japan following a devastating earthquake that struck Hokkaido. A powerful earthquake rocked northern Japan early Thursday, triggering landslides that destroyed many houses and other buildings in Hokkaido. The tremor reportedly left two persons dead and more than a hundred injured. It occurred just as the nation was reeling from Typhoon Jebi, the strongest in over two decades.
- Senate minority leader Franklin Drilon said reopening the dismissed cases of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV would be tantamount to showing there is instability in the country. Drilon, a former chief justice secretary, warned that if the validity of the amnesty given to Trillanes, which was decided seven years ago, is considered void ab initio and the cases are reopened, it would trigger a slew of case review of amnesties granted by the government.
- Japan confirmed for the first time that a worker at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant has died after being exposed to radiation. The man aged in his 50s developed lung cancer after he was involved in emergency work at the plant between March and December 2011, following the devastating tsunami.
- In the second day of the confirmation hearing, US President Donald Trump's SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh said he would not let political pressure threaten his judicial independence, as he assured senators he respected the landmark legal precedent protecting abortion rights. - US President Trump attacked Nike over its support of Colin Kaepernick as the first commercial featuring the former 49ers quarterback was unveiled. Nike revealed on Monday that Kaepernick would be at the center of a new campaign to mark the 30th anniversary of the company’s “Just Do It” slogan.
- Spain PM Pedro Sanchez asked Catalonia’s separatist leader Quim Torra to start a dialogue with those against independence and ditch his “posturing” to ease tensions in the region. Sanchez, who came to power in June after ousting his conservative predecessor Mariano Rajoy, offered Monday to hold a referendum on greater autonomy for Catalonia as a way to ease the crisis.
