- Moderate to heavy rains are expected in most parts of the country tomorrow as the powerful typhoon Mangkhut (Ompong) continues to gain strength and moves westward into the Philippine Area of Responsibility. In its 1100 hour advisory, PAGASA said the eye of the typhoon is last observed at 1,845km east of southern Luzon as of 0800 hours local time. It is packing maximum sustained winds of 170 kms per hour near the center, gusts of 210 kph, and moves west slowly at 25 kph.

- Department of National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana denied allegations made by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV claiming that a so-called “Davao Group” is meddling with the ongoing military modernization program. Trillanes claimed that the “Davao Group” has been demanding and telling the Armed Forces of the Philippines on what equipment to buy and procure for its modernization program.

- Senator Nancy Binay slammed the Department of Trade and Industry over their lack of ingenuity in addressing the high inflation and the skyrocketing prices of commodities. Binay said the DTI should have re-deployed the “rolling stores” project so that the poor have access to affordable commodities to cushion the impact of inflation.

- Over a million people were ordered to flee the path of Hurricane Florence as the powerful Category 4 storm packing winds of 140mph bore down on the East Coast of the United States.

- Talks to bridge the differences between the United States and Canada to salvage the NAFTA will resume on Tuesday. Canada’s Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland will again meet with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on the rewrite of the 25-year-old trade deal.

- The United States announced it will shut down Palestinian mission over lack of peace talks with Israel. The State Department said the Palestinians had refused to engage with either the United States or Israel and of rejecting outright a still unseen US peace plan.

- US National Security Adviser John Bolton warned that they will arrest and sanction judges and other officials of the International Criminal Court if it moves to charge any American who served in Afghanistan with war crimes. Bolton called the Hague-based rights body “unaccountable” and “outright dangerous” to the United States, Israel and other allies, and said any probe of US service members would be “an utterly unfounded, unjustifiable investigation.”

- Vietnam's first carmaker VinFast will showcase their sedan and SUV concepts at next month's Paris Motor Show. These cars are running on BMW platforms, engines, and drivetrains and they've handpicked designs from Pininfarina.

- Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch is set to appear in a new thriller penned by Steven Knight.

- Fil-Am dancer Hannahlei Cabanilla was named the winner of the 15th season of So You Think You Can Dance.

- Miss Universe 1995 winner Chelsi Smith passed away at the age of 45.
