THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: US imposing sanctions on Chinese and Russian firms

The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Chinese and Russian firms for their alleged role in helping illicit trade with North Korea in violation of international sanctions.

The US Treasury Department explained in a statement that these companies engaged in illicit trade with Pyongyang, adding it will freeze their assets within the US and ban them from doing business with Americans.

It also made clear that such a measure is in line with the UN Security Council sanctions, and the consequences for violating these sanctions will remain in place until it has achieved the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea.

Meanwhile, South Korea's defense ministry announced that inter-Korean military communication lines for the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula were completely restored as of Wednesday.

The restoration of the eastern military line comes 8 years after it was cut due to wild forest fire in November 2010.

South Korea's defense ministry said, with the complete restoration on both sides of the peninsula, South an North Korea's military have now secured stable communication channels, and this will substantially contribute to easing military tensions and building trust between the two.
