THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Osan ceremony
A solemn ceremony was held at Osan US Air Base Wednesday evening, commemorating the return of 55 sets of remains believed to be American troops killed during the Korean War.
About 500 key military officials from Seoul and Washington attended the ceremony, including South Korea's defense chief Song Young-moo, UNC Commander General Vincent Brooks, and US ambassador to South Korea, Harris Harris.
The remains were later loaded onto the US transport aircraft bound for a DPAA laboratory in Hawaii, where historians and scientists will work on forensic identification.
Meanwhile, at the 51st ASEAN Foreign Minsiters' Meeting in Singapore, South Korea's foreign minister Kang Kyung-hwa has several bilateral meetings lined up today in Singapore. Minister Kang is expected to sit down with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov at 1700 hours, local time, followed by Japan's Taro Kono and China's Wang Yi.
These countries are key stakeholders in current situation on the Korean Peninsula, and the peace process initiated by the administration. South Korea's top diplomat is also likely to discuss specific issues with these countries with Japan, following up on the "comfort women" issue, and with China and Russia, economic cooperation as part of Seoul's New Northern Policy.
