- Following yesterday's signing into law of the Philippine Identification System, the Philippine National Police has bared that over 106 million Filipinos will benefit from national ID system, although student activists warn of "mass surveillance."
- President Rodrigo Duterte sends members of the Cabinet to help secure the safe release of Filipino workers kidnapped in Libya.
- Meanwhile, President Duterte fired Nayong Pilipino officials over the approval of an irregular long-term lease contract of a government property. Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said the President also wanted to cancel the 70-year lease contract, which he found as “grossly disadvantageous” to government.
- Chinese leader Xi Jinping congratulated Emmerson Mnangagwa on his election as Zimbabwe's president, according to state media, offering support after the African nation's opposition cried foul. Mnangagwa has urged Zimbabweans to unite after he was declared the first elected head of state since Robert Mugabe’s removal from power, but the opposition leader has insisted he won and has pledged to challenge the result.
- Twin Northern California blazes fueled by dry vegetation and hot, windy weather grew Monday to become the largest wildfire in state history, becoming the norm as climate change makes the fire season longer and more severe.
- 11 people were killed and almost 70 wounded in a weekend burst of violence in Chicago that instantly became a political issue when US President Donald Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, blamed the carnage on longtime Democratic rule in the city. Police on Monday attributed the dozens of shootings to gangs, the illegal flow of guns and sweltering August heat that drew more people outside.
- Brian France, the chairman of NASCAR, has been arrested on charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to authorities.
