- The National Food Authority must take measures to prevent a repeat of the weevil infestation of its imported rice shipments, according to the Malacanang as Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque acknowledged that fumigation of the rice imports was still “not a perfect excuse,” adding that authorities must ensure the next stocks would be free from pests.

- A Malaysian financier involved in a massive corruption scandal that brought down the previous government was charged with money-laundering, police said. The move is seen as a key step in trying to get baby-faced businessman Low Taek Jho, who allegedly played a central role in plundering state fund 1MDB, extradited to Malaysia to face justice.

- India and China agreed to boost their military ties and enhance interaction to ensure peace on their common border, following a meeting between the old rivals' defense ministers. Relations between the Asian giants were strained last year over a 73-day military face-off in a remote, high-altitude stretch of their disputed Himalayan border. But the neighbors have over recent months been working on mending ties and visiting Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week that their countries’ friendship dated back to ancient times.

- The United States accused China of destabilizing cross-Strait relations following the announcement this week that El Salvador would end diplomatic ties with Taipei in favor of Beijing. “The United States will continue to oppose China’s destabilization of the cross-Strait relationship and political interference in the Western Hemisphere,” the White House said in a statement.

- The third-generation BMW Z4 was unveiled prior to its Pebble Beach premiere with its M40i First Edition powered by a 340HP straight-six engine as well as sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport braking system and an electronically controlled M Sport differential in the rear axle transmission.
