- The Malacanang is standing firm with its commitment to maintain the Southeast Asian region a nuclear-free zone following reports of a possible entry of nuclear warheads in South China Sea. Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made the statement after the Pentagon warned that China’s outposts in the Spratly Islands may soon be powered with a “nuclear element.”
- Philippine National Police chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said the PNP remains confident that it will finally arrest businessman Peter Lim despite failed attempts to get him in connection with the drug charges leveled against him.
- The chairman of the House Committee on Transportation is counting on Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and airport officials to attend the Lower Chamber's probe on the Ninoy Aquino International Airport runway mess on September 5.
- The United States declines invitation to Russia-led talks on Afghanistan because they are unlikely to help bring peace, a State Department spokesman said Wednesday, as the Trump administration prepared to appoint a diplomatic veteran as a new special envoy for the war-battered nation.
- China has reported another outbreak of African swine fever that threatens the country's pork industry, but officials say they have the situation under control.
- The Islamic State group releases a new audio, purportedly of its shadowy leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, his first in almost a year. In the audio, al-Baghdadi — whose whereabouts and fate remain unknown — urges followers to “persevere” and continue fighting the group’s enemies everywhere.
- Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen called for unity and vowed not to bow to pressure from Beijing as the island marked 60 years since the China attack. The anniversary of the assault on tiny Kinmen island, known as the “823 bombardment”, comes as China steps up pressure on self-ruling Taiwan, which it sees as part of its territory to be reunified.
