- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte urges members of the ruling PDP-Laban party to unite and rally behind the administration's programs on federalism as well as anti-drug and anti-corruption efforts. The President issued the unity call to foster a “very bright future” for the country during the 1st anniversary of PDP-Laban Cares and PDP-Laban leaders reunion in Pasay City last Wednesday night.
- The proposed shift to federalism is good for the economy, according to Concom member Professor Edmund Tayao. Tayao compared the shift to moving to a new house that will entail additional expenses at the start but generally improve the stature and condition of the occupants. “Just because you have additional expense when changing the form of government doesn’t mean that that additional expense will be there forever. Additional costs in federalizing the country is an investment that would boost the country’s economic activity later on,” he said.
- The workers' group Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress said a provincial bus ban on EDSA is disadvantageous to workers. ALU-TUCP spokesperson Alan Tanjusay said the implementation of the provincial bus rush hour ban is counterproductive, inconvenient, expensive, and stressful for thousands of workers.
- China will send a top negotiator to the United States in late August to resume trade talks, according to the commerce ministry, the first public meeting on the subject in weeks as trade conflicts intensifies.
- The US government will expand visa sanctions on Cambodians in the wake of the July 29 election which Washington labels deeply flawed and “neither free nor fair.” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the US government would expand restrictions on granting US visas to certain Cambodians instituted late last year in response to undemocratic actions by the ruling party and its allies.
- An Iraqi refugee was arrested Wednesday in Northern California on a warrant alleging that he killed an Iraqi policeman while fighting for the Islamic State organization. Omar Abdulsattar Ameen, 45, and other members of ISIS killed the officer after the town of Rawah, Iraq, fell to the Islamic State in June 2014, according to court documents.
- About 20,000 BMW vehicles are banned on South Korean roads following 27 cases on engine fires in the country, according to reports. The incidents prompted BMW Korea to issue an apology as well as a recall for 106,000 diesel-powered vehicles.
