The race begins with a disaster as the soon-to-be retired Fernando Alonso sent himself flying in a spectacular first-corner crash where Nico Hulkenburg crashed Alonso's rear and then Alonso vertically hit Charles LeClerc. Perhaps this is the main reason why the halo cockpit was made for and LeClerc lauds the halo for keeping him safe from Alonso's flying terror at the first corner.
After all that first corner incident, the race packs up with more exciting moments such as Verstappen's charge through Esteban Ocon, Valtteri Bottas' Eau Rouge pass on Brendon Hartley, and a multi-lap battle between Hartley and Ericsson. In the end, Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari emerged as the winner with Lewis Hamilton second place and Max Verstappen's in third place.
With his 52nd win, that moves Vettel ahead of Alain Prost into 3rd in the all-time list of drivers accumulating the most wins in their career. Post-Spa, the lead between Hamilton and Vettel is now narrowed to 17 points, 231 vs 214.
The next race of the F1 2018 season is at Italy on the 2nd of September.
