The 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series continues at Gateway Motorsports Park, Illinois, for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 and a lot of drivers still remember the horrible Pocono incident from last week where Robert Wickens was severely injured during his horrifying crash, so they pay tributes for him, wishing him to get well soon, and after all of their best wishes, the action at Illinois goes full throttle.
The race begins with a yellow flag as Scott Dixon leads the race and when it began, Sebastien Bourdais ended his race prematurely with a crash at turn 2. As Dixon continues his lead after the restart, Will Power and Alexander Rossi began charging behind him. Simon Pagenaud, meanwhile, is starting to lose his pace from fifth but managed to fight his way through fourth place finish. With Rossi made a save at Turn 2, Power overtook Dixon on Lap 150 for the lead. Meanwhile, Charlie Kimball experienced issues during his Turn 4 nudge while Ryan Hunter-Reay's fuel pressure problems washing away his hopes for a top five. That drama gave Power, Dixon, and Zach Veach some preparations on the last 70 laps.
Rossi's fuel strategy may have worked very well but Will Power, the Indy 500 champ, overtook Rossi for the lead with 13 laps later and kept driving to nail his Bommarito Automotive Group 500 win. This marks Will Power's 35th career win and became seventh all-time tied with Bobby Unser.
After the race, Dixon's points lead is still in place with 568 points, 26 points ahead of Rossi, and 68 points ahead of today's winner.
