- A safety officer became the 38th casualty of last weekend's NCCC Mall fire in Davao City, who sacrificed his life rescuing call center agents.
- Some fireworks like sparklers, "fountains", and other pyrotechnics are still allowed at households to ring in the new year as the Philippine Fireworks Association clarifying misconceptions in the interpretation of the provisions of Executive Order 28 signed by President Rodrigo Duterte to regulate the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnics.
- About 23,755 families are spending the New Year at evacuation centers after losing their homes to widespread flooding and landslides spawned by Tropical Storm Vinta.
