Aftershocks continue to rattle the southeastern city in South Korea following the M5.4 quake last Wednesday. Just this morning, residents there felt a M3.6 aftershock, a matter of hours after they experienced a M3.7 quake before midnight Sunday.
So far, over 50 aftershocks have been recorded, leaving thousands of residents staying at nearby shelters. Some 2,000 houses have been damaged by numerous quakes.
The country's second-strongest tremor and a series of aftershocks that hit the port city on Wednesday have left 498 public properties destroyed. Other damaged buildings include 79 public offices and parks, and 23 port facilities and seven roads.
Meanwhile, the Korean government confirmed that suspected bird flu case was found to be highly pathogenic. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs said that the AI discovered a day earlier on a duck farm in Gochang, Jeollabuk-do Province, some 300km southwest of Seoul, tested positive as a highly pathogenic strain of H5N6.
Some 12,000 animals on the farm have been slaughtered. Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon has instructed related government ministries to cooperate closely, adding that detailed government measures will be announced soon.
This is Korea's first bird flu case in five months since the government confirmed the previous outbreak in July.
