- The University of Santo Tomas marks a day of mourning and prayer for victims of senseless killings, which has suspended work and classes to give the university time for its observance. The declaration also coincides with the 45th anniversary of martial law.

- At least 216 people died when a powerful 7.1 earthquake struck Mexico on Tuesday, including 21 children crushed beneath an elementary school that was reduced to a rubble. - The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has been opened for signing. To date, about 50 UN member states, including the Philippines, signed the treaty (with more on the way) while only three ratified the treaty (including the Holy See), less than the 47 needed to enter force.
