- The Armed Forces of the Philippines chief-of-staff General Ricardo Visaya said the Duterte administration is taking several actions to save the hostages who are held captive by the Abu Sayyaf terrorists in Sulu. Visaya said the military has intensified the surgical strike against the group to keep the militants on the run but he said the soldiers were also directed to take caution and consider the safety of the hostages.
- Onto the Dallas shooting incident, US authorities said the recent ambush of police officers in Dallas last Thursday, that killed five officers and injured seven others, appears to have been the work of a lone gunman, identified as 25-year-old Micah Johnson. The suspect stated to negotiators that he wanted to "kill white people, especially white officers". US President Barack Obama's Europe visit has been cut short and he will visit Dallas early next week, calling the attack "vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement".
- NATO will deploy troops to Baltic states and Poland for the first time and increase air and sea patrols in response to Russia's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine. At a leaders' summit in Warsaw, NATO decided to move four battalions, totaling up to 4,000 troops in north-eastern Europe on a rotating basis.
- Nadine Lustre, Eat Bulaga's Maine Mendoza, and Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach were among the FHM 100 Sexiest Women for 2016.
- Designated Survivor actor Kiefer Sutherland returns to the reboot of a 1990 film Flatliners, which starred him and Julia Roberts.
- Doctor Who's Alex Kingston is set to return on American television as part of the cast of the upcoming reboot of the Gilmore Girls.
